Americans are so out of touch with reality

...and yet we have the highest standard of living in the world. Go figure.

Um, not according to HDI. According to that we are ranked #8 behind...

Norway
Iceland
Australia
Ireland
Sweden
Canada
Japan

HDI is more than just standard of living though.

Never heard of Tiesto.

And to those who don't like American arrogance, fuck off.

Ok for the sake of argument lets break this down in a systematic manner...

Football is huge in the US... That said, the Bears are probably not among the top recognized teams in the nation. Let's say they're in the 2nd tier of teams in terms of recognizability. Lets Assume 75 percent of Americans know them 300 million * 75 = 225 million Americans are 'aware' of the Bears.

Tiesto isn't as huge in America, in fact his notoriety is limited to those under the age of 30 - for the sake of argument lets say that 5 percent of Americans know tiesto - 300 * 5 percent = 15 million Americans

In Europe, Electronica/Progressive is easily the most popular music played in nightclubs and such. It's equivalent in the US would probably be a hybrid between Light Rock/Alternative (in widespread appeal) and R and B (in terms prominence/airplay/club play), Tiesto, in other words would be like Nickelback and 50 cent combined in terms of widespread appeal and airplay in nations with heavy european influence. Definitely not amongst the most recognizable of all time, but pretty well known amongst those who pay even the slightest bit of attention towards current pop culture. The Eurozone has ~320 million people and countries that peg the currency to the Euro add another 160 million individuals to this number. 480 million * 50 percent awareness rate = 240 million.

American football is definitely less followed in Europe... For the sake of argument lets say 5 percent of people in the Euro-influence zone follow American football (480 x 5 percent = 24 million) and 75 percent of those people are aware of the Bears (24 mil x .75 = 18 million).

So now lets sum up awareness numbers in these two large home markets for both of the parties involved
Awareness Chicago Bears in the US - 225 Million
Awareness Chicago Bears in the Eurozone- 18 million
Total US/EuroZone Awareness = 243 million People

DJ Tiesto Awareness US - 15 million
DJ Tiesto Awareness EuroZone - 240 million
Total US/Eurozone Tiesto Awareness - 265 million.

These are baselines... now for the rest of the world (ROW), we should proceed with the following assumptions:
3/4 people that are aware of American football know the Bears
3/4 people that are follow trance music know DJ Tiesto...

With those assumptions held, it comes down to the following:
Outside of the US and Euro, what is more popular American Football or Trance/Electronic music... Answer that and you have the answer to the question posed by the OP

Unfortunately your basis for those numbers has no basis .

Also most adults do not necessarily know the artist they are listening too. They just like the music....whereas those that follow football usually at least know the team(s).

I would also put the Chicago Bears as a team that more than 75% of the US at least knows about. Some of the lower tier teams you are probably looking at less than 75% knowledge.

50% of Europeans know who this guy is? Grandma making pastries in the kitchen knows this DJ? Maybe 50% of Europeans under 30 knows who he is, maybe, but 50% total? I find that hard to believe.

You're not even accounting for Asia where a huge number of people care about Trance.

75% of Americans know the Bears? Hahahaha, you gotta be kidding me. It's a lot lower.

also people are forgetting that the Chicago Bears have been around a LONG time. Today's line up is hardly mentionable, but Refridgerator Perry got the team known just on his name sake. Like Mean Joe Green for the Steelers.

I'm sure you would agree that ROW includes Asia with that said it's clear that there are more ROW trance listeners than Football Watchers.

What I did was break down the question into some what reasonable portions to give an answer which is somewhat defendable instead of talking out my ass like the 100 others in the thread. A question like this is pretty much fair game in I-Banking interviews... whether my numbers/assumptions are correct or not they offer a good frame work for coming to a reasonable answer to the question posed by the OP.

For the record I agree with you, it's doubtful that 75 percent of americans know who the Chicago Bears are, it's equally as doubtful that 50 percent of European's know who Tiesto is... that said what matters is the magnitude of awareness levels... In other words with the resources availiable to me, I cannot assert that the 75 percent/50 percent levels are correct, but I assume based on my experiences in the US and Europe that if you were to ask a random strange about the question posed in the OP for every 3 americans that know the about the Chicago Bears, 2 Europeans have heard of tiesto...

Hardly a perfect science, but it's a start...

I think DJ Tiesto is going to replace Jessica Alba as the ATOT favorite fap material. I can't believe this is going to go three pages.

A good pic to show how packed the floor was: Pic

There's empty seats in the upper deck. So? How many people is that? 20k? 30k?

That's true. However, the promoters limited the ticket sales to 15,000. The event did sell out and they would've easily sold way more if the promoters allowed it. I think it's because they didn't want it to be a clusterfvck like other events they've held there - i.e. Monster Massive 2006. There was about 30,000 ppl there and you couldn't move anywhere.

Ditto. Is he a soccer star or something? Does DJ stand for anything or is it just another clever soccer naming gimmick?

Edit: Just read some of the other posts... CasioTech likes him so I'll assume he's a purveyor of gay dance music?

Tiesto

He's probably more known worldwide when it the people asked are below age 40. Above that I am not so sure.

I'd say most probably more people worldwide know the name Chicago Bulls than the name Chicago Bears.

Oh, and I'm Dutch.

This poll should only have been open to foreigners methinks. NOBODY knows who the Chicago bears are, Tiesto on the other hand....
