Approximately one month ago a gaming website I host with Moreweb.com got defaced. I then replaced it with a backup which is stored on MoreWeb?s server. Jason Detar, CEO of MoreWeb, asked me to patch a PHPBB problem and I did. I researched the problem and applied the proper patches to the best of my ability. Now, approximately a month later I get a notification that my account has been suspended due to excessive resource utilization. It appears that my account was hacked and the user was sending large amounts of spam from the server. The resource utilization peaked in excess of 40% load averages, creating a severe amount of latency for the other customers on that server.

I apologized for the trouble this caused him and simply asked him for the SQL database I had set up, as it had the most current information from my site. Then he could terminate my account which was prepaid until August ?06. He wouldn?t do it. He gave me two options: either pay $50 as per the TOS to get my account re-activated or Termination of my account. When I attempted to reason with him asking him for a small step in good faith (temporarily activating my account so I can retrieve my data) he wouldn?t budge. I was completely outraged. So now I am forced to pay $50 just so I can get data that was mine to begin with. I know that Moreweb hosts AnandTech?s website and that the deal I took advantage of was Moreweb?s way of giving back to this community, but the treatment I got made it one of the worst ?Hot Deals? I ever took advantage of here.

Well I said my peace and will move on but I wanted my story to be known. If you have time please post your thoughts. I hope I am not the only one who sees it as me getting punished for some immature punk who hacked my website and one business man who can?t understand someone else?s point of view.

How so?

Well it sounds like they are being difficult. However, if you would have had a backup of your data, you would nopt have a problem...

sounds like it's your fault. just pay the $50 and be done with it...you can't expect any business to do anything "in good faith"

i have never had any trouble with moreweb, and their support has been perfectly fine for me

They ran a hot deal for 50% off their normal price for the Anandtech community.

I did have a recent backup it was through their backup system. I also had an offsite backup from a month ago. I guess I learned my lesson. I am now backing up daily on my own servers.

You're right you can't expect it but he will never get my business again. All he would have had to done is acknowledge my point of view (not agree) and he would have a repeat customer at his regular rates.

I do agree their support has generally been great.

Sounds to me like he should have given you access to your files. He runs a web host company. You rent bandwidth from him. You are given the space to upload YOUR files. It only seems fair that you be allowed to take YOUR files with you when you leave. I wouldnt do business with someone like that either. So basically, you wouldnt be mad if you had hosting from him, got spammed, account suspended, and the he wouldnt let you take your files? I understand him shutting down the site to solve the issue but I dont see how it could harm him to grant him sql access for a couple hours to d/l his database.
