i got rejected by Morgan Stanley for a summer internship in their institutional securities division. it took them over a month to get back to me, i almost missed a deadline for my other offer. in any case, the reasons that they offered was that I wasn't motivated, I didn't research the company enough. I spent a whole day preparing for this interview damn it. good thing i got an offer from somewhere else though, i didnt prepare for that interview at all and it was relaxed and i was very much myself.

MS is going down anyway, with all those execs leaving. there have even been talks to splitting the firm!!! that's just insane!!! MS is number 2 on the league tables!!

so anyway, anyone with any interview advices and experience, please share. i am gonna need a fulltime job next year.

when i went through internship interviews in january, i studied the firms from front to back. i knew about the work culture and outside of work culture.

as for morgan stanley, i am assuming you wanted some kind of banking position. don't they ask brain teasers for those interviews? i know my i banker and S/T friends were all studying the brain teaser books before interviews.

nah, it wasn't for investment banking. and i got the interview through a contact who was the exec director of the division, why i didn't get the job is beyond me. i prepared thoroughly for this interview. i read all the Vault guides, researched MS's culture, mission statements, work habits. checked vault forums etc etc. the job was sweet too, it was in support of ibanking, so only 10-hour days. all i would have done was statistical analysis too using sas and such. i really thought it was bullsh1t that i didn't get hired because 2 of the 6 VPs who interviewed me said over and over that i am the man for the job

as for brain teasers, they just want to see your reasoning skills, no need to study for those as long as you depend on logic. i am beginning to think that i am not cut out for a job in a major ibank. after i failed miserably with the CSFB S/T interview. just bombed it. but it was my first interview, and i had no idea what i was doing. just need to try and try again next year.

that sucks but that's life. i wanted to do consulting this summer but all the big consulting firms didn't give me an offer. i nailed at least one or two of the consulting interviews as well.

i ended up getting offers from all four of the big four accounting firms and i'm happy.

i'll try consulting again this fall while i'm doing my MAcc

i basically applied to all business management, consulting, ibanking and insurance firms. BCG and Baine didnt even bother to get back to me. think i got my CSFB s/t interview by some freak accident. the interview for that position was 3 rounds by the way, wtf? for an intern, 3 rounds? got my offer with Zurich financial services though, doing risk analysis stuff.

i never did banking interviews so i'm not sure if three rounds for a S/T internship is alot or not.

all my interviews were campus interview and then office visits for more interviewing fun.

my best friend works there, and so does his sister. they work down in D.C., but they aren't brokers or anything.

considering that it's not primarily a brokerage house... what do they do?

Don't feel so bad. It was only for an internship.

I bombed a job interview at a hedge fund a week or so ago. I got the wrong background on a fund which I thought was a fundamental bottoms up fund when in fact it was a value driven quant fund. I prepped for the completely wrong types of questions and it showed. Its alright though. The guy was a complete jerk-off, like my friend told me and the only right information he gave, so I don't feel so bad.

Many places have more than 3 rounds for the summer analyst programs. BCG does not take undergrads for interns. Bain has an Associate Consultant Intern program, and will only take students from the schools they recruit from.

Wife got rejected for an interview at WVU... didnt even get the freaking interview.

at 8pm thursday, the Lady from HR called to offer my wife an interview for 1pm the next day. Unfortunately she had already scheduled a trip from pittsburgh to pheonix leaving 9am friday morning, and coming back monday morning at 5am. She paid 425 NRF cash for the plane ticket, and could not reschedule the trip. Well the lady says if you cant be here at 1pm tomorrow, no interview, no job, because she needed someone to start 8am monday morning.

Now I understand being appointments for interviews and such, but less than 24 hours notice for an interview and expecting one to drop everything? That place just really irritated me. I *almost* know if she had the interview, she would have gotten the job, because she did the exact same job @ Pitt for 3 years.

How about 26 interviews for a Goldman Sachs job? Those fvckers make you jump thru hoops man. All in all, it ended with a job offer. The guys are so arrogant at that firm.

MANY GS ladies are window dressing for client meetings--if you have half a brain and good looking, ladies should be able to get GS job.

Tell me about it, preparing for interviews and actually doing them (especially the ones which flew you on site to NYC) basically took an entire two weeks early in the semester devoted to nothing but that. The good thing is that it seems like the job market is finally beginning to look up, so even here at Cornell filled with all the over-achievers of the world, it's at least becomming possible for us mere mortals who don't make the library our second home to get a decent summer internship.

You know that is a BS excuse not to hire. That means you were probably a pretty good candidate, but you didn't click with the interviewer. They couldn't think of a really specific reason not to hire you, and had to come up with something lameass.

I got turned down during several interviews last year, all the time receiving very silly reasons like yours. Then I got hired to work for one of the Big 4
