What does everyone know (or think they know) about this church? I've been thinking about joining on the basis that they seem to be the purest of all chuches and getting to go across the world on a funded mission would be pretty fun.

I know quite a bit about the religion now, but I'm here to discuss some of the myths and fallacies about mormons and the LDS church...and I'm here to defend it.

Well, what's everyones thoughts?

Purest of all churches?

No good will come from that statement at AT.

Should be a good firestorm in here to watch though.

I've seen the episode and I think it's quite funny. I watched it with a few church members and they laughed too but pointed out a few things that were incorrect (such as nobody else seeing the golden tablets, etc).

I thought it was actually great to see them laugh at the episode making fun of them while the catholics, scientologists, etc all tried to get those episodes about them banned.

Has it made you feel better about yourself? I'm 21 years old and I feel like I could be doing so much more with my life than going to school and working...and after months of talking with friends who are mormons...I've really decided to look into this seriously.

Nah, just another sheeple church, where they take 10% of your money.
C'mon, you guys really believe that a prophet named Joseph Smith, was really a prophet?
Do you believe they really found those gold plates?

I've asked the question, of where those gold plates might be, to several Mormons over the years. They don't exist, as they are supposedly sealed up in heaven.

I personally feel that the Mormon church is tilted about as far "out there" as any.

My view is, that organized religion is a way of management of masses, as well as a way to extract money. I don't believe in organized religion, as I feel if one has a relationship with his maker, then it's one which is personal.

i can honestly say that i am such a better person for having done it. it was an experience that really has changed my life. to be in a situation where all you do all day is think about other people and what you can do for them was great

I understand that the history isn't the easiest thing to soak in...but that's how it is with all religions. I've yet to really delve into the history of Joseph Smith, because right now I've become interested in the other things the church does. Like 10% of money...every member i've talked to swears up and down that 100% of all donations go straight to the benefit...and that the LDS church is one of the most efficient and effective charity organizations in the world.

If you're looking for a good background, especially of the extreme fundamentalist of the religion, take a look at Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer. The book was very interesting, and will give you a perspective on the 'other' side of the religion, so to speak.

Every religion is going to have things its not proud of, things done in its name that most people disagree with, but that does not mean that things like that should be covered up and ignored. If you're seriously looking at joining, I know I would want to take a look at everything involved.

Also, are you sure that they fund the missions? I've been under the impression that those are on your dime, and that people are expected to donate 10% of what they make to the church. I could be wrong about them funding the missions, maybe its partially paid for if you go overseas(Not all of the missions are overseas by any means, and I don't think you have much say in where you go).

On the other hand, your average LDS member is generally a really good person. The church has a ton of flaws in my mind, but the 'average' person is better than average in terms of what they do for the community, how they treat other people, etc. That's not to say that you need to join the church to be a good person, or that everyone within the church is a good person.

Where are these plates he had to translate? And how were they translated without a Starfleet Universal Translator?

Scourge, if you say there are tons of flaws yet the average Mormon is a good person, then how come they can't see those flaws and leave the church? Good people, but ignorant?

Would you give up your life because humanity has it's flaws?

if you want an even better book, because Under the Banner of Heaven is full of a lot of "opinions" just read the history of the church or of Joseph Smith

We have a non-paid clergy. Where do you think all of that money goes? Church buildings, temples, missions, church materials, etc. At least we don't pass around a collection plate or ask TV viewers to give us their credit card numbers.

Do you have any proof Moses was a prophet? Wait, do you have any proof that God even exists? No, you don't. If you had proof then what would be the purpose of having faith?

I fail to see how we are so strange. We raise families with good values, we promote higher education, we perform service wherever it's needed without any compensation.

I understand there are fundamentalists and extremists...just like in every church. It's important to understand that the mainstream LDS church does not accept them and ex-communicates those who practice plural wives and such.
