HERES THE ULTIMATE SOLUTION:

when hes not around go to his comp and open regedit, then go to the following path:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\CounterStrike\Settings

or under halflife if u have the mod version... now open "KEY" and replace your cdkey for a bogus one. just make something up. so he wont know whats wrong when he suddenly gets an invalid cdkey error

Search for all keys containing MICROSOFT, delete.

If using 2000/XP, log on as admin or one with admin rights and remove all access (via NTFS security) of the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder. (C:\WINNT\SYSTEM for 2k). He'll get a nice STOP upon rebooting!

Another solution. FInd one of those widely-pirated hL cdkeys and put it in his registry. When he connects to bnet, it will say invalid cdkey. When he asks you why, just tell him that's what happens when people steal other's HL cdkeys.

Report him to judicial affairs. They'll probably ban him from using any university computing services (including the labs) because of software piracy.

Or if he's as computer illiterate as you say he is, uninstall his display drivers and set it as Standard SVGA. And then laugh at his futile attempts to get CS to run. Stuff like editing/deleting the CD key won't work because all he has to do is reinstall CS (with your stolen key) and he'll be up and running again. Troubleshooting a video driver problem on the other hand is a little trickier for a noob.
