<< I'm sorry, but I don't care if this is a preview edition; it still sucks. Music City should be doing what it's done before, and just upgrade Morpheus 1.x to the new code base. Gnutella is simply too bloated/unorganized to run a good file sharing network; something that FastTrack accels at. Even when you don't look at the network, Morpheus still has problems. Who designed the GUI? A 12 year old? I realize MusicCity licenced the FastTrack client(complete with GUI); but still, considering most of their code for MPE comes from open-source Gnutella clients, you'd think they'd at least try to use some of the time to emulate the 1.x GUI. Oh, and for anyone looking for files, you'll have to sort them yourself. MPE doesn't divide up files by audio, video, ect; you get everything with a matching name in the same results.

Until the day FastTrack dies, or Gnutella becomes like FastTrack(complete with the super-node structure), I have no intention of using MPE. The action will continue to be at Grokster/Kazza, not Gnutella.

PS Is it me, or does the GUI of every Gnutella client suck? I mean there are some better than others, but they all seem to be second-class GUIs compared to things like WinMX, Scour, Napster, and FastTrack
>>

It's not just you. Gnutella is one of the worst file-sharing schemes ever designed. There are so many better ones out there, like Fasttrack, WinMX, Direct Connect, etc.

Damn this does suck. I tried all sorts of things to get it to work - after 10 minutes it finally connected (had to keep clicking load nodes) - search was a little slow and the file I tried downloading never did.

So is it just me or does the preview edition not only not show the encoding level in the results box, I can no longer only search based on certain criteria - > 192, etc.?

first off they had to hack this thing together in a week. It will improve. 2nd i'm getting 50 k/sec so i am not complaining. Once it starts looking good people will be on it and it will have more stuff. the only reason they had to come out with one so fast, is to not lose all their market share. this is a quick fix but i'm sure they are working on it.

I wonder why there isn't yet a FastTrack-like p2p network to replace the Gnutella one? How difficult would it be to create and implement one?

Supernodes is a very good idea in a large p2p network....

So is the new Morpheus just Gnutella or what? I'm using the old version and can connect fine with it now. Only 103000 on though.

That's a very good question. Someone figured out not only how to do the topology of the pre 1.3 version of FastTrack, but they nailed it down to the exact protocol. Why they haven't at least used the knowledge of the Supernode system is beyond me.

yeah what would be nice is to sort of phase out gnutella in favor of an open source fasttrack-like network, and get some LINUX client(s)!!

It's working good for me, and its very fast. The college capped Morpheus/kazaa bandwidth on the resnet, but this is nice and fast and more convienent than using audiogalaxy. Hopefully everyone else stays on kazaa so they don't figure this out.

This is ridiculously TERRIBLE!! If you right-click on all of the "Unable to connect" transfers, and click on "Extended Info" you'll see most all files are from Limewire. I left Limewire cause I liked Morpheus and all the search options it had. This is very upsetting, and I sure hope this "Preview version" does not last and they fix the old one. I don't see how anyone here can say they like it.

I still can't connect.. even if I load the GnuCache, it loads the 4 servers.. then one by one removes them and then just stops connecting... nothing.

That blows my mind!!! This is CRAP!!!

I can easily believe that the problem lies with KaZaA and the competition over the Fasttrack network but, for MucicCity to switch to Gnutella can only mean they are on their way out!

Oh well, no skin off my scrote...I'll try Grokster according to yooz allz's advice and try to go from there! As far as Morpheus is concerned, it's gone!!!! I will never use the sickeningly wormed and bloated Gnutella network ever again.

As far as I am concerned, OpenNap OWNZ!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps this is a good opportunity to ask about Refosearch again.

It's supposed to be a hacked version of kazaa, without any spyware, but it is remarkably elusive to find a copy for download.

Wow....I must say I like it. I get ULTRA fast searches...IE, I type it in, and as SOON as I hit "Enter", I get a barrage of results.

I tried downloading two things; and I got one quickly, and the other failed. About the same as before, at least for me.

Nice.

StreamCast/Morpheus CEO Steve Griffin
This week MusicCity and Morpheus users suffered dual attacks. First, early this week MusicCity's servers were hit by a massive Denial of Service attack. Soon thereafter, Morpheus users found that a separate attack had been launched on their computers and their Morpheus software programs. It appears that the attacks included an encrypted message being repeatedly sent directly to your computers that changed registry settings in your computer. Later, it appears our ad servers were attacked resulting in messages being sent to other sites without our knowledge, which threatened our most basic revenue model. We believe some of these attacks continue as Morpheus users attempt to connect to the old Morpheus User Network. This was why it is important to quickly deploy our new software product.

This unprovoked attack is being carefully investigated, as it appears that federal laws may have been violated. We are still attempting to discover who would want to eliminate the community of millions of consumers who are using the Morpheus software product to connect with other users around the world.

These attacks have forced us to more quickly deploy our new software product in order to allow you to bring the largest p2p community back together. Since it appears that the attack on your computers came from the closed proprietary FastTrack-Kazaa software, we have opted not to continue with this p2p kernel. We believe it to have the ability to access your computer at will and change registry settings. In addition, we remain committed to NOT bundling any spy ware with our product.

We are pleased to migrate to an open Protocol product with the release of Morpheus Preview Edition, which is based on the very large network of Gnutella users. The new software will provide you with the ability for faster searches, the display of more search results, and many more new and exciting features. KEEP IN MIND that this is only our preview edition. Any time change occurs, many object and think the old version was better. Our objective is to create a new and exciting software product. Since our company and your p2p network are being attacked, we would appreciate your constructive comments for improvement, not simply criticisms. With you help and input, we will continue to provide the pre-eminent p2p software product in the world.

Lastly, we want to address some of the misinformation we've seen recently. There have been many comments that we caused these problems intentionally. Let me assure you that we would NEVER treat the Morpheus users in this fashion. Others have said we would re-launch with a paid subscription model, again, not true. Our commitment is to always provide you a free version of the Morpheus software product. Thanks again for making Morpheus the most widely downloaded p2p product in the world. We are hard at work to provide you with the products you have come to expect from our company. From our perspective p2p means people to people.

Our goal is to create the software that lets you create the network. Thanks again for your support.

BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU CLICK
A recent press statement announced that KAZAA/Sharman Networks has a new program that allows you to re-connect to the Kazaa/FastTrack Network. This new program is NOT endorsed by MusicCity and will NOT allow you to connect to the Morpheus/Gnutella P2P network. We find it interesting that someone sent a message to your computer earlier this week which prevented your Morpheus Software product from joining the network and now a new software installer suggests that it allows you to re-connect. Remember with Morpheus, no spy ware just a great P2P software product.

The new Morpheus Preview Edition
This new software product uses a different method of connecting and searching for information. There are several key differences. Two of the main advantages are the ability to search both the WWW and the world wide Morpheus/Gnutella Network. In addition, the number of search results has been increased from 200 to an unlimited number. Our Catalog City shopping allows you to purchase virtually anything online. To learn more about how to use and enjoy the new features of Morpheus (more)

Help us build the new Morpheus
Over the next few weeks we want to hear from you about how to make your new Morpheus software the peer-to-peer product you want it to be. We will be showing you new Morpheus logos, introducing new communication features and asking you for feedback about the new software. Keep your eyes open as each day we post new information (more)

Morpheus Discussion
Did you know you can use the Morpheus Discussion boards to discuss issues and get answers to questions? Over the next few weeks, this will be the best place for you and the other users of the network to communicate.

How can we Help?
We greatly appreciate and value the loyalty of the Morpheus software user-base. We would love your support and over the next few weeks we will be asking for it in a variety of ways. Stay tuned.

Once again people DO NOT SUPPORT KAZAA OR GROKSTER.

What ever happened to giFT, the gnu internet file transfer program? Did KaZaa screw them over as well?
