Morrowind intermittently hanging for 4-5 seconds every few minutes....

I went to Media Play the other day, and decided to buy a game. It was more or less an eeny-meeny miney mo type deal, cause I havent really kept up with whats out there today. So I chose Morrowind.

My problem is that every few minutes, the game will "freeze" on me, and I can hear that one peice of music loop over and over, and the mouse/keyboard wont respond, and nothing moves. I have no idea what the problem is. My CPU doesnt heat up too much at all when running it, so I figure its pretty GPU reliant. My only other thought is that perhaps its the cd drive spinning up and reading data?? Anyways, heres my specs, perhaps someone can give me a starting point on where to look/fix this.

GF4 Ti4200 oc'ed 275/540 w/ new Detonator 40.41 drivers
XP 1500+ @ 1800+ (tried running it back down at stock speed, didnt do anything)
Asus A7V333 rev. 1.02 BIOS rev. 1008
Mushkin PC2700 256mb Hi perf Level 2, running @ 22251 (ran it at stock speeds 2.5/3/3/6/2, didnt help either)
TDK Velocd 32x12x48
431w Enermax Whisper

I guess I could try setting my cd drive to not spin down but if thats not the problem, it could get really annoying to have it spinning 100% of the time.

Any help is appreciated.

Tried setting the cd spin down time to 8 minutes, didnt help much at all........

Could it be that you travelled from one zone to another and the program is loading the textures and etc?

Nope, cause when I travel from one zone to another, I get the little "Loading Exterior" box.

Plus you know something is wrong when the sound is looping over and over again, the system doesnt respond and, yeah.

Any other ideas?

Mine freezes occasionally as well. Some times it freezes in mid jump. I have a geforce 4 4600 with 2100+ athlon XP. The game is pretty detailed and I have my viewablel distance slider set at the highest level. I always thought the freezing was just due to loading the massive environment detail as you move around.

Could be I have realistic shadows up all the way I think, and have viewable distance at 1/2 or so I think. Oh well, I can live with it. Damn, seeing as how this game almost has no point, it sure is fun

Also try the no-cd patch. It can be the stupid cd protection scheme not allowing the reader to read the cd properly.

Google. NoCD patches, while incredibly useful for legal owners of games, (and hardly a nuisance to pirates) are illegal, and direct linking them here is prohibited. But seriously, Google.

have you tried defraging your hard drive and seeing if that helps?

try to modify the 'morrowind.ini' file. look for the info about morrowind tweaks in www.gamefaqs.com

Dont worry, I always keep my HDD defragged, I do it every few days when I get bored and think to do it It doesnt matter right now though, cause my PC is FUBAR until I get a Win2k cd to repair something, I'm getting the "winnt\system32\config\system.ced is missing or corrupt" which basically means my registry is having some problems, but I cant get to it, cause I have no bootable floppy, and no cd (bought the handbuilt PC from someone, he installed everything, I never got any ofthe disks)

And after making my other post, I thought to check google and I found the patches, thanks guys

BTW, when you are used to your PC w/ XP 2000+ speeds, fast ram, and a TI 4200, and 19" monitor, playing around on your parents 3-4 year old HP Pavilion w/ Celeron 450 and a 15" monitor just plain sucks
