I'm looking to buy a turn based stratagy game, or RPG for my dad, and I was hoping I could get some advice. The game has to be turn based because he has little to no hand-eye coordination, Diablo 2 is way to fast for him to play. I was wondering if Morrowind fit this description, and if not if anyone had any suggestions?

Morrowind is an RPG, and most RPG's are real-time, not turn-based. In fact, all of them are AFAIK. You can pause combat in some games, but that's as close as it gets. The only thing that comes close is a game that is so old I won't even mention it.

A turn-based strategy game is much easier to find, but still not too many choices. A lot of the turn-based empire building games still have real-time combat. You know I can't even think of any off the top of my head... it's not a very popular genre..

Morrowind is not turned based in combat.....it's real time. I'd say it's easier to do combat in MW than Diablo cause all you have to do is have the enemy in front of you, in range, and then you hold the mouse button down to strike (in melee, the longer you hold it down the more force the strike has).

Silent Storm is a decent turned based game. Kinda like the Jagged Alliance series. Fallout: Tactics is another one. JE and FT are rather old games but good ones.

Edit: Replying to malak, he's thinking of games like Civilization and Alpha Centauri....empire building games that require a good deal strategizing and studying. The games I mention earlier are purely tactical.

Morrowind is real-time combat, so it would probably not be a good choice. The gameworld is vast and offers lots of exploration, plus it is fairly open ended. This game is not for the casual gamer, either.

Unfortunately, modern turn based RPGs are rare. The most recent one is The Temple of Elemental Evil. While riddled with bugs, it is still fun and has a small, but very loyal community that released numerous fan fixes. Other than that, some very worthwhile turnbased RPGs include Fallout 1 & 2. They are older, but still lots of fun if you can find them. Wizardry 8 is turn based and worth getting.

In terms of strategy games, Civilization III and the expansion (Conquests) are lots of fun. Galactic Civilizations is another option, though I didn't care for it.

I'm sure others will come to mind.

Turn based strategy: Civ3 w/conquests

Even though it's a little real time(your characters roll dice to attack, aka D&D), Planescape:Torment & The Baldur's Gate series are such a joy to play. PS:T is probable my favorite rpg of all time.

and:
Jagged Alliance 2 (turn based squad level modern day combat with strong RPG elements).
Heroes of Might and Magic II and III (not IV it stinks)

KOTOR is a fairly easy game, it doesn't require any hand-eye coordination since the computer controls all attacks (which are just D&D dice rolls under the hood).

Morrowind does require real-time movement and mouse clicking to swing in combat, it would probably frustrate him.

Morrowind was the best RPG i have ever played, although Deus Ex comes close.

Morrowind was ok but nothing special,Planescape Torment gets my vote for no.1 all time classic ,BG series was pretty good just like the Gothic series, turn based games he might like would be "The Temple of Elemental Evil" and "Pool of radiance."

The Temple of Elemental Evil homepage .

Morrowind is a stellar looking and feeling game. The one problem I had with it is that the goals are somewhat obscure. If you don't have much patience, I couldn't recommend it. I played it for about 2 months, then I realized I didn''t know what the heck I was supposed to be doing. Its a hard truth once the novelty of the graphics wears off. He may enjoy it if he has the time to really absorb the world and the objectives.

I recommend a grand strategy game titled "Hearts of Iron 2"... lookie here: .preview

Basically this is a game where you can play any country in the world around the time of World War 2, and use that country's resources to research new technologies, build armies, forge alliances all within a pretty accurate historical context. You then get to rewrite history as events occur and battles are waged.

The game is brand new- ships today- but since it really focuses on gameplay it's got rather poor graphics so you can run it on just about any computer you might have.

I *highly* recommend getting this for someone older who don't have the quick hand eye coordination for the FPS games out there, especially if he's into history.

I have been involved in beta testing this game since summer so I can safely say it's a solid product

Hearts of Iron is a pretty great game. Think "Axis & Allies" with about 5 billion more options, heh.

I'm really looking at this one.....and a little intimidated. Played the demo, just fooling around and got slaughtered. Looks like they've toned down the research from the first one a bit making it a bit more accessible to someone less than the grognard. And that's fine by me.

I know u can get FFVII (final fantasy 7) for computer for probably around $10-15. This Final Fantasy is probably the 2nd best i've played (yes, i've played through all except for 11...). It's completely turned based fighting, you can take all the time you want to take your turn in battles. Pretty fun, though the graphics are crap...

Disciples 2 is a game worth looking into. You can get the Rise of Elves expansion for $10-$15 and it comes with the original Discples 2 game.

The infinity engine games are all turnbased behind the scenes, but I do not know if they all can be set to totally turn based (that is when they pause after every combat turn)
I have all infinity engine games so I could check but I'll give you a list of the ones I know 100% sure:
- Baldurs Gate I and II (BG I can be put into BG II using BG1Tutu)
- Icewind Dale I and II
- Fallout I and II

I'm not sure if planescape torment and the original BG I (not placed into the BGII engine) can be fully turnbased.

The turnbased means that you set the game to autopause after every combat turn, everywhere else it will be real (compressed) time but in general these games have nothing against the clock (as far as I can remember, there is sometimes that you have to get from point A to B in a week gametime but that's most of the time very generous since you just have to travel there)

Now these games might be a bit old (they ARE a bit old) but they have a nearly unsurpassed storyline (Star Wars KoToR is close if not equal in terms of story) and will get you hooked.

If your dad loves roleplaying and interaction between different people i'd reccomend the fallout series and the BG series.
Planescape torment is also a fantastic RPG (the best imho) but it's incredibbly tough, you need to be quite smart to see the solution to many puzzles and riddles.

if your dad would prefer some more action i'd reccomend icewind dale, it's also an RPG and you also have interaction between externals, but you design your entire party of 6 so there's no interaction in your group of players that you control.

I think most of these games can be found in the bargain bin or online (the really old ones like Fallout 1 and 2 and BG I are rather hard to find)

Now for something completely different:
Space Empires IV:
which can be found here http://www.malfador.com/
Is an exellent turn based space strategy game, but it's not an RPG (you can roleplay in it with other players, but it's mainly a very tough strategy game)

I hope you find something your dad likes.
