1. Because I dislike the ecosystem. Being forced to use one software from one company sounds a bit big-brotherish to me.
If MS tried to do that they would be sued for Anti-Trust violations

2. Because all apple products put form over function. The layout of the interface on all apple products is retarded. Do you know how much I hate using my gf's macbook? Nothing is where it should be. If you remember in the pre OS9 days the close button was an empty square on the left hand side. That shit just ain't logical. The first computer I ever used was a system 6/7 macintosh. And I hated it because even for an 8 year old the layout was retarded. I used Windows 3.0 next and loved it. Windows had color and games like Commander Keen. All apple had was a monochrome GUI and no entertainment.

3. Price. I bought my Asus G73 for 1500$ brand new last year. Spec wise the nearest macbook would cost 2.5 grand. For 1500$ at the time a mac would only be 2/3rd's of what my G73 is.

4. The aura of infallibility around apple. The hypocrisy that apple is allowed to get away with is just ludicrous. MS does something it's automatically Bad. Apple does something it's automatically good. Apple adds a feature "OMG Apple you're so innovative!" MS adds a feature "Bleh who needs it?" or "OMG MS STOLE IT FROM APPLE!" etc etc.

Not to mention the media attention apple gets for it's product releases.

5. The cult of mac. This is probably the biggest turn off from me. You ever been pestered by Jehovah's witnesses to convert? My gf's uncle is a 'machead' and he just downright annoys me. Everytime we cross paths all he does is go on and on about how apple is so great and that MS is so bad. It's like these people built their entire identity around a computer company. And they're trying to defend it by preaching to the choir. Apple sells it's products to the uninformed bottom of the barrel consumer by playing the "We're not MS" role. That's just low. My gf likes her apple products but she's not like her uncle.

Apple made an enemy out of IBM in the 80's and Intel and Microsoft in the 90's. That's just unprofessional. Microsoft software products to me have always looked and felt better than apple's. But the media loves the underdog and just loves praising apple at every turn. Fock the underdog. There's a reason apple is second. Because they didn't give the consumer what they wanted in the first days of the GUI war and MS filled in the hole with windows. And apple's constant bitching to the FTC and DOJ means that microsoft can't include several pieces of it's software on windows. MSE, Moviemaker, etc. I have to download it from Microsoft.

Hey this is just me. Some people like apple. I don't. I prefer windows because the UI is miles ahead of any competitor. Sure I have my gripes with windows too. But it's changeable without going down into the kernel. If say apple or google were to make a serious competitor to windows and had everything I wanted/needed in an operating system than I'd jump ship. But for now because noone is serious I'll stick with windows. Just like I switch between Intel and Amd, and Amd and Nvidia.

EDIT: Oh yes I do have a droid but I'm considering getting win phone 7 because it has so many more functions that ios and android don't.

iTunes sucks. That's the worst thing when using Apple device. I just put up with it but that doesn't mean I have to like it. It may be great for new or novice users but sucks for us old school folks. I actually liked iTunes when it first came out and in the early days. Now it has long worn out its welcome.

number of those things i care about doing

0

Google backs up my apps, as does titanium, i need no syncing
i don't use my phone for music, not enough storage, need at least 150 gigs
not in school notes almost meaningless, if i take them its at work and i have paper
i would never read a book on my phone, or a tablet
vids same as audio, also screen way too small,
google backs up contacts
i have 2 DSLRs 3 film SLRs a medium format camera and a 4x5, i Never use my phone camera
see above
there are apps to back up SMS, however its not something im worried about

even if i were to use my phone for audio or video or pics, an android device appears as a removeable drive, i can drag and drop whatever the fuck i want

thats also a major issue i have with the ipod and well all apple items. there is absolutely no reason any USB device should not be mountable as a removable drive

because needing to be tied down to a computer to use a phone or tablet sucks. Some basic wireless syncing is needed for Apple. You have to use it just to use the phone or tablet. It would be a lot better if they didn't force you to hook it up to a computer just to use it.

I can see how someone doesn't like to be tied down, but it doesnt bother me personally because I dont have to use multiple programs to keep things in sync. I like the convenience of a one stop shop sync, but hey thats why I have an iPhone and others don't.

If I'm not mistaken, I don't think iPhone users HAVE to use iTunes other than updates. Speaking of updates, that's one thing from Android that's pretty annoying, but with every phone it's give/take.

Overall, IMO, iPhones ecosystem just works, well for the everyday user anyway.

Not sure I get this. The close button in OS X is in the upper left corner, along with everything else. In Windows, it's in the upper right, often next to nothing.

I don't remember the last time I clicked on the close button, though. Cmd + W to close a window/tab or Cmd + Q to quit the application is just more convenient for me on my MBP.

Here's the problem. Just because it's not for you, doesn't mean it can't be for anyone else either. Some people like to read a book on their phone. Or use their phone camera (See Flickr uploads and how iPhones are rapidly increasing). Most people have their media in itunes because it's easy to organize and easy to buy from. Having it be mountable as a removable drive is not something that is easy for a normal consumer to comprehend.

Like I said, just because the iPhone isn't for you doesn't mean it's not for everyone else.

OS9 and earlier had the close button as an empty box all the way on the left-hand side. I prefer it in windows with it being in the upper right hand side and isolated because it's a can't miss. And with the startbar being on the bottom it makes it almost impossible to hit the wrong button.

Also I really dislike the mac startbar. It's like having your entire kitchen's controls, microwave, oven, blender, etc in one panel. And the last appliance you touched is the one you will use even if you wanted to use a different one. Also it requires too much clicking from one program to another.

time I clicked on the close button, though. Cmd + W to close a window/tab or Cmd + Q to quit the application is just more convenient for me on my MBP.
Only shortcuts I use are Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V, and Ctrl+F.

All hail ALT+F4!

Agreed on this. Not because I hit the wrong buttons, but because the isolation makes things seem less cloggy. But on a laptop, it's another story. Having to use my trackpad to go from corner to corner of the screen is just ridiculous. That's why I like the "start bar" at the top, and the close button in the upper left of the window. Everything is within a few inches of each other, and I barely have to move my finger across the trackpad.

Also I really dislike the mac startbar. It's like having your entire kitchen's controls, microwave, oven, blender, etc in one panel. And the last appliance you touched is the one you will use even if you wanted to use a different one. Also it requires too much clicking from one program to another.

My appliances tend to block each other, so it's really no different to me. VS is blocking my web browser. And as soon as I click on iTunes, it'll block every other toolbar. It's too cumbersome to have multiple large windows open on a single screen, anyway, which is why I love using Spaces on my MBP. On a desktop with multiple displays, on the other hand...

That's not really a desktop, but I'm just trying to get a point across. Notice that there's only one "mac bar", and it's on my designated main display. iTunes is a bad example, but say I have Xcode open on my second display: if I wanted to change some project settings or open a new project, I'd have to move my mouse cursor from one screen to another just to access those functions on the "mac bar". Retarded. You can customize the toolbars, but that doesn't have everything, I believe. Maybe someone that's pro at OS X knows a way around this, but I don't and it's annoying.

Only shortcuts I use are Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V, and Ctrl+F.

All hail ALT+F4!
Alt + F4 is a pain to reach for compared to Cmd + Q. :hmm: Some applications in Windows close with Ctrl + Q, but most don't.

I agree with a lot of the other people here, but I seem to differ as I don't hate apple so much that I will never buy their products no matter what... I hate Apple products because of itunes and not being able to drag and drop... This doesn't mean I won't buy apple products, as I had the original iphone, a couple ipod classics and an older nano... also if I were in the market for a tablet today it would definitely be an ipad2... but I still hate using itunes and would prefer the much more simple drag an drop ability as everything else on the market allows.

I am a rational person and will buy whatever is best for my money and needs at the time: AMD/Intel, ATI/Nvidia, ios/android/winmo7, etc... but that doesn't mean I can't hate the proprietary crap or driver preference that I have to put up with along the way with any of those choices. It is just a factor in my initial decision, if apple has the superior product and I feel the competition is lagging I will then decide if I want to put up with using itunes or not then buy accordingly.

As it sits now, I think that the competition in the smart phone arena is good enough that personally I can't see myself buying another iphone unless they come out with something completely ground breaking and cool like the original iphone... the competition has caught up completely an arguably surpassed (go debate that all ya want, I don't care), so I don't have to deal with itunes with a phone hopefully ever again, yay!

Same for me. I did buy an iPod shuffle but I never used it because it was so much work to transfer a few new songs.

iTunes is probably the main thing that puts me off the iPad as well. Why do you even have to connect it to your PC in 2011? Why not let you update or transfer files over wifi?

My iPod Classic is the only Apple product I like, so I don't hate Apple, I just don't like their ridiculously overpriced products. They aren't worth more than their equivalents, regardless of the arguments on these forums.

Just bought my first Android phone & there's no way I would've taken the iPhone over it, even at a severely discounted rate, which I was offered (~$50).

Not to mention more OS's have left side closes than 'Windows' right side.

Also you have to be a fucking knucklehead to not realize if you love the form, you can load Windows 7 on it.

I run Snow Leopard and Windows 7 in converged mode. Most that bash Apple stuff get blown away when I open up a Mac only program then launch Visio from my dock and it opens in about a split second.

It's just like those that think iPad's can't view most websites...for one there are alternate browsers and second most sites are working hard to gain full compatibility.

That said a lot of site don't render right in the latest IE or FF either, nor older versions.

I never really understood the command key over control :\ I guess with not using OS X too often its just odd using it over control for many things.

First time I tried control + t for a new tab in safari I was rather confused

Also, with the exception of IOS apps rules I like many apple products. I just don't agree with being locked into one service without jailbreaking.

Hell right now I have 2 win7 machines, a macbook pro, latitude d830 w/debian.... OS really doesn't make too much of a difference for me.

If you double click the left side in windows it closes anyway. They probably moved the regular close button to the right because on the left side there's more chance of you accidentally closing the window when you're going for the file menu.

But why do I need iTunes to do that? I can do any and all of that as needed. Why do I want a music/video app backing up my apps? Contacts are done automatically along with calendar /w google, no seperate software needed. Infact I can edit my contact list online if I wanted to for some reason.

SMS and even the call log can be backed up with MyBackup or one of a dozen other apps. Music I sync with Winamp since winamp is probably one of the best media apps for android and it's a pretty good music app for windows too.

So yes, I guess you may be able to do that it just seems semi pointless to me. Why do I want a music program dealing with my text messages? It is the main reason I refuse to use itunes. I don't want quicktime. I don't want to lose support for loseless formats like ogg and flac. I don't want to lose the ability to have the option to add features through plugins as I want to. I don't want Apple deciding how I should use my stuff. Oh and most everything on itunes (outside of apps) is the same price or cheaper on Amazon anyways.

None of these are legitimate. You can install Windows on a Mac, there is no need for you to use iTunes except for maintaining a device. Complaining about price is like trying get buy an Aluminum Audi for the price of a Toyota. Complaining about some Mac users is like disliking Priuses because of some of the people who drive them.

That G73 was a huge waste of money, one of the most problematic mobile GPUs I've ever owned with the horrible driver support (crash, lock, grey screen of deaths). You're not getting anything past me since I've owned just about every Laptop worth looking into.

As it appears you are merrily proving, the typical Apple hater is an irrationally offended nerd who takes personal offense at superior build quality and design products that don't happen to cede much modification control to the end user.

If you want to compare the smarts, I'm guessing most Apple users are actually smarter than you. We can afford them, for starters.

Well the Windows key everyone takes for granted now was majorly poo-pooed by the industry. IBM/Lenovo would not put them on their keyboards until rather recently. Many others placed them in non-approved spots.

Add that to the fact that Microsoft calls for not only the Windows key but an Option Context (right click) key and that causes a lot of hardware change alone just for an OS.

The problem with Android users is since that they have nothing WORTH backing up, they assume no one else does either. :'( An iPhone like mine has constantly updating pictures, downloaded magazines and eBooks. It also has data from Apps like Momento (a journaling app), Finance Apps, Task Managers, Notes, etc.

Ogg and Flac! Wait, who cares? There's an App for that, but who cares?

Apple is deciding how I should use my stuff! Huh?

Amazon is cheaper anyways! I use Amazon for my Mp3s too, you've lost me.

Why is it that an iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad's storage (8, 16, 32, 64GB) is inaccessible from Windows without iTunes? Drag-and-drop is such a well-known and often-used feature in personal computing (even on Macs) that it seems stupid to unnecessarily limit access to the storage.

I know Apple wants you to do everything with iTunes, but really... the "ease-of-use" argument doesn't apply here. Everyone knows how to drag-and-drop... and for those select few who don't, guess what.. they probably don't have and aren't interested in a portable media player, smartphone, or tablet anyway.

My point is why the hell do you make assumptions people should want itunes? And how the hell do you know what android users have? I have pictures, backed up on Picasa (built into android). I have music stored on Amazon Cloud Drive, but even if I didn't I also have Winamp I sync with. I have Amazon Kindle App which Amazon stores all my stuff. My notes are stored online with evernote and my Apps are backed up with MyBackup. So yes I do have just as much shit to backup as you and I do so quite easily. I just prefer to have my own options in how I play store and install everything.

And while that may be a good amount of stuff... I can restore every single bit with 3 screen presses using MyBackup.

Oh and it should be my right to not want that piece of bloated crap called quicktime which tries to take over my whole PC. And yes Apply very much has control over what you install on your device unless you jailbreak.

The reason i dont like apple...OVERPRICED. Just like a few others have already said with the price it would take you to get a good apple computer you could get a great win system. And if you get a apple sys computer there isnt any way to upgrade. If I want to add memory or upgrade a cpu then tuff luck because I need to buy a new computer to do that. If we're talking smartphones the current price (im oversees...not currently in USA) of the top iphone is quite a bit more expensive then other phones inn the same class. So why would you want to spend a bunch of extra money for something you could get cheaper

Now this is something that I really like...just about every apple computer owner that i know has their computer set up so that it can also launch in windows or at the very least they have the computer set up to accept windows programs. Now, I have a win based computer but I dont need to have any apple components on my system So to me I just dont see the point in going apple.

That's a great question to ask Apple. Maybe they were just lazy? Maybe there is a reason they don't want you to drag and drop onto an iPad or iPhone. Maybe they'll just add the feature in iPhone 5 and call it "magical".

I recommend a large capacity keychain flash drive for real life usage.

Oh why does Android force me to use Amazon, Picasa, MyBackup etc etc? Boo hoo?

Are you listening to yourself?
