The car/income thread got me thinking this may be an interesting thread (plus people here like their toys):

What do you do for living and what's the most expensive toy you've got?

by toy do you mean my comp rig? my video camera? my RPG books...?

I don't know what qualifies as a toy.. But i'd say my $600 iPad is just about as useless as one would need to call it a toy

I'm a forensic investigator. Purchased a geiger counter for $900. It's OK, as I wrote it off as a business expense. I now keep the geiger counter in my living room and it's always the topic of conversation when we have guests.

Hrmm... I've got an M16A1 that my dad bought for me back in the early 90s when they were $3k. They're worth around $20k now. Haven't taken that thing out of the house in over a decade.

I also have a 2001 Ford Lightning with an upgraded supercharger, rebuilt bottom end, headers & exhaust pushing ~650hp. It's got 6,500 miles on it, and has been sitting in the garage back in Texas for years. It seemed really cool when I bought it, then when that wore off I started with the upgrades, but eventually just got tired of it.

I'm an Army type stuck in Louisiana for now. Last job was an IS department manager.

EDIT: When you said toy I assumed you meant an unnecessary extravagance. That doesn't seem to be the direction this thread is going though.

My most expensive "toy" (although I use it for work and play) is my 2011 27" iMac - $1800. Other than that it would have to be my 32" TV or PS3.

Probably my 52inch Sharp Aquos LCD. Either that or my Xbox360/Games/42inch Sharp LCD setup I use for gaming. I don't do much PC gaming so my PC rig isn't too expensive. I have a decent gun/hunting collection as well.

Probably entertainment center in the living room. 42" 1080p plasma. PS3. Boxee Box, plus a ton of storage on my PC for streaming media. Planning on adding a 5.1 or a 7.1 surround setup in the near future.

Probably my boat - Glastron 18.5 foot fish/ski combo. 190HP Volvo Penta.
Many happy days spent in that boat. Many days of cringing over expenses related to that boat. Last time I filled it up, the gas pump maxed out at $125. Tubing/water skiing/ sight seeing/ cruising around/fishing all summer = small fortune.

$500 laptop
$500 Glock
$1000 SLR camera/lenses
$1000+ worth of bonsai trees
$2000 car

It appears that my hobbies are fairly cheap compared to others.
