who regrets the thousands of hours they spend (insert whatever people do for a hobby here)?? ive read a crap ton of books in my life so far...should i feel bad i dont have a masters in literature?

kind of a pointless question imo. its not any different from people spending time reading, or watching tv, or running, or building model train sets, or visiting art galleries, or painting, or bird watching, or kayaking, etc, etc, ad nauseum.

Yup. It's just that playing video games hasn't yet been accepted as a normal hobby in our society.

Many people still think of video games as mindless time-wasters like Tetris, or generic arcade racing games. They've no idea that some games offer engaging storylines with movie-like production qualities (ME2, DE:HR, W2 etc...)

= Baldurs Gate 2 - Probably thousands. one run through with each character class, and then some.
= KOTOR 1 and 2 - Close to a thousand. Several run throughs with Consular, a couple each with Guardian and Sentinal.
= Age of Mythology - Several thousand. 30-60 minute games at a time, MANY games. Plus campaign several times.
= MOO2 - Thousands. TONS of games at one hour each.
= Dawn of War - Thousands. Same as AOM.
= Act of War - Thousands. Same as other RTS's. Campaign several times, loads of single games.
= Other games, a lot, but not in the thousands. Not even Elder Scrolls or Fallout. Not any single Final Fantasy game, even though I've played through FF1 with pretty much every viable party you can think of. FF2 many times even though its always the exact same game. FF3 many times, but I usually end up with my favorite people on most dungeons.
FF7 many times, again its usually the same group. FF8 once. X-2 once.

Oh, Heroes 3 probably a thousand hours total. Each campaign and expansion many times.

Played something like 5-10 hours every single day for 4-5 years or so in Ultima Online. So I estimate a figure of 10,000 to 15,000 hours of fun or so. Never played that way since, for any other game.

I wouldn't characterize it as a waste of time either. True, I could've gotten some degree or some such had I the money, but I was at that point where I didn't know what to do with my life. Every single educational pursuit I engaged in prior to UO was a failure. What UO did was to help me develop a few necessary skills I didn't know I sucked at, and it also gave me time to find direction in life. I just thank the holy ramen bowl the game I spent my formative years allowed for extremely open-ended gaming (where players can do almost anything). Had it have been some other game I was addicted to, I may never have found the direction in life I was seeking.

And that direction is? Just curious

So who regrets spending thousands of hours playing video games knowing you could have got a masters degree instead? ....I wonder if they have courses in video game engineering?
Nope, don't regret it, and I still got my master's degree while graduating top of the class.

And when people ask me how I did it, I say: "the power of PC games, my friend, the power of PC games. Now, I'm off the save the world - again."

I bet when I'm wrapped up in earning my doctorate, I'd be playing just as hard  If Steel Thunder and EOB3 has taught me anything as a child, it's that playing PC games don't need to interfere with whatever it is you need to get done IRL.

It's not so embarrassing since it's been 3 years now, but like many others it has to be WoW. Every day for over a year I played for 8-10 hours a day. When I finally quit my playtime was over 85 days. 85 full days of just sitting on my ass looking at pixels.

It was a tough decision, but going back to college won out over being the best tank on the server and the best equipped female tauren.

wait, was it worth it? OH GOD

Graphic Design. It started as a hobby with Photoshop, but ended as a profession with Illustrator. I really sucked at it. But the skills I got from UO allowed me to shove past that, I treated it as just another in-game skill. All those hours mindlessly training & "8x8"ing skills really came in handy.

I have a hard time believing that you spent 250 days playing a singleplayer game. Not counting breaks or sleep.

I've never played Morrowing personally, but I've heard of people playing it for 500 maybe 800 hours, but 6000?? really?

That's pretty interesting. Glad things worked out well for you

I'm up to 400 hours played in Rift...

If I had a way of tracking my total time playing starcraft, it would likely be thousands of hours.

i was the first player to log 1,000 hours into Oblivion and report it on the The Elder Scrolls forum - and i did it in less than 2 months.
:whiste:

i leveled up my character (topped out at level 92 without cheats or using the console) while i slept (held down KB keys with coins to keep my avatar casting spells while running in a corner).

Eventually i played with the high-level mods & probably put 1300 hours into it; the last time i revisited Shivering Isles was this Spring in 3D Vision Surround (5760x1080)

There are 1344 hours in 8 weeks in total. That ratio (~1000) over an 8 week period would mean playing Oblivion about 18 hours a day non-stop, and sleeping for 6.

Doubt it.

None of these games are open world. They're fairly linear, so how did you spend so much time on them?? Did you just replay them over and over?

Though from what I've heard, DA:O does have tons of content buried in the game that you can easily miss on your first playthrough.

I somehow managed to put 130? hours into DAO, 2/3 through a 2nd playthrough--and I even skipped the mage's tower chapter (with a mod). No idea how that happened.

Basically you're a nerd.

But I agree, it's hobby... I swear I'll be 80 years old and playing Bad Company 15... calling everyone noobs and having a great time.

I see no difference between playing video games and playing more accepted types of games like Pool or Chess... when I say video games I really mean PC games... consoles aren't my thing.

He said he left it running overnight to level skills, so I'm sure that counts toward his thousand.

Civ or Civ 2. My very first Civ game I played 32 hours straight until everything around the monitor looked Black and it was a bright sunny summer day. I even remember many details of the Map and newb mistakes I made.

WoW by a long shot. I probably have 8 to 9 thousand hours between all my characters over the years I played.

Been playing a few hours of Oblivion on most days for the last five years. I keep trying different races and placing various constraints & totally ignore the main quest after having solved this a long time ago.

For example, it's against my current Breton's (a cosmic trickster of sorts) religion to buy/sell/use nonmagic items and pay for training. She also loves to use 10'-area wide frenzy and command creature spells while sneaking and watches the mayhem ensue. Her leveling is slow but she can already tackle quite powerful opponents. Once she gets a mundane ring, she'll be totally immune to magic attacks.
