Explain why you think it's so influential/cutting edge or it doesn't count.

I'll start it off with an old school tune:

Song: So Whatcha Want?
Artist: Beastie Boys
Reason: The distorted beat, the rhyming style, the music video, all of it was way ahead of it's time. I still listen to this song frequently and marvel at how much it's influenced the rap/rock bands of recent.

I wouldn't say it's the best, by a long shot, but that song is on my MP3 player for gym workouts.

I like 2pac's "Changes" and Nas' "If I Ruled the World". I could also make a case for some PE songs from the late 80's.

Hieroglyphics - At the Helm (Del > *)

EDIT: Ah this is hard. My vote:
Deltron 3030 - 3030

Reason: Del's lyrics and delivery are smart and smooth as fvck, instrumentation by Dan the Automator is ridiculous.

Mos Def >>>>>>>>>>>> *
Yo, it's one universal law but two sides to every story
Three strikes and you be in for life, manditory
Four MC's murdered in the last four years
I ain't tryin to be the fifth one, the millenium is here
Yo it's 6 Million Ways to Die, from the seven deadly thrills
Eight year olds gettin found with {{.9 mils}}
It's 10 P.M., where your seeds at? What's the deal
He on the hill puffin krill to keep they belly filled
Light in the ass with heavy steel, sights on the pretty ****** in life
Young soldiers tryin to earn they next stripe
When the average minimum wage is $5.15
You best believe you gotta find a new grind to get cream
The white unemployment rate, is nearly more than triple for black
so frontliners got they gun in your back
Bubblin crack, jewel theft and robbery to combat poverty
and end up in the global jail economy
Stiffer stipulations attached to each sentence
Budget cutbacks but increased police presence
And even if you get out of prison still livin
join the other five million under state supervision
This is business, no faces -- just lines and statistics
from your phone, your zip code, to S-S-I digits
The system break man, child, and women into figures
Two columns for who is, and who ain't niggaz
Numbers is hard to feel and they never have feelings
but you push too hard, even numbers got limits
Why did one straw break the camel's back? Here's the secret:
the million other straws underneath it - it's all mathematics

Black on Both Sides is one of the best albums from the late 1990's. Black Star > *

I really can't respect anything you say about hip hop because of your statement.

Nas - Affirmative Action

The intro is awesome... and I love the first few verses.

Yo, sit back relax catchin contacts, sip your cog-nac
And let's all wash this money through this laundry mat
Sneak attack, a new cat sit back, worth top dollar
In fact, touch mines, and I'll react like a Rottweiler
Who pull the late, we play for high stakes at gunpoint
Catch em and break, undress em tie em with tape, no escape
The Corleone, fettucini Capone
Roam in your own zone or get kidnapped and clapped in your dome
We got it sewn, The Firm art of war is unknown
Lower your tone, face it, homicide cases get blown
Aristocrats, politickin daily with diplomats
See me I'm an official mack, Lex Coupe triple black

song /s??, s??/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[sawng, song] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
?noun 1. a short metrical composition intended or adapted for singing, esp. one in rhymed stanzas; a lyric; a ballad.
2. a musical piece adapted for singing or simulating a piece to be sung: Mendelssohn's ?Songs without Words.?
3. poetical composition; poetry.
4. the art or act of singing; vocal music.
5. something that is sung.
6. an elaborate vocal signal produced by an animal, as the distinctive sounds produced by certain birds, frogs, etc., in a courtship or territorial display.
?Idiom7. for a song, at a very low price; as a bargain: We bought the rug for a song when the estate was auctioned off.

As they are not singing but talking what does it rank under to be called a song? I wouldn't exactly call it 'poetry', and the only other options are either an animal sound or something cheap.
