I was with you until your last sentence.
I really need to leave this board.....WTF....
Yeah, as usual, people are confusing why music is significant with "I don't like them...so I can't understand why on Earth a huge population of other people don't feel the same way."
There is no point to these debates- everyone has different tastes in music. If you don't like a band that has been loved by millions (billions?) of people over the last half century, then you're just in the minority, that's all.
A quick rundown of what all the bands that people find "overrated" and what they actually contributed to music:
Pink Floyd- Brought concept music to the forefront. Their music has been lost in translation because albums like The Wall were actually one song that took up an entire double album (much like a symphonic piece would). Clips and pieces are played on the radio, and that's what people judge their music on- and it's a damn shame.
Led Zeppelin- Pretty much invented heavy metal. None of the hair bands of the 80's or grunge rock of the 90's would be around if not for them. People like to say "but they stole this and they stole that!" to knock them off their podium, but it's a weak argument. Jimmy Page took old blues songs and added riffs to them that have unmatched power and sexiness---to the point where people are still trying to play like him 40+ years later. Robert Plant's singing style was brand new---NOBODY sang like him before, but everyone has tried to copy him since. Jones and Bonham are musicians musicians and made rhythm sections that any band would kill for. Their first 6 albums have gone gold and platinum every year for the last 40 years because of this. Think about that for a while.
The Beatles- Their initial gimmick was they were British (ooo...exotic!) and good looking playing music that was forbidden in the heavy Christian valued USA. Then their creativity started to shine through and they switched to melodic composition. Their study of world music made them experts in melody---to the point that anyone can hum a few notes of one of their mid-era songs and recognize it. Melody is the basis for music (REMEMBER THAT RAP ARTISTS), and The Beatles created some of the most memorable melodies of all time. You probably hear their music in movie sound tracks every day and don't even realize it.
The Rolling Stones- They were the first band to sell sex, drugs, and rock n roll. They started out as a blues cover band, then Mick Jagger- who had the disadvantage of "being butt ugly"- started strutting around and shoving his ugliness in women's faces. His confidence and unusual style made him one of the most desirable men on the planet All of that jumping, dancing, swinging, etc he does on stage---nobody did that before. All of today's extravagant stage show antics were born from him. Keith Richards is probably the best rhythm guitarist on the planet. His freestyle, 5 string finger picking style is only used by him, and was only mastered by him. Ronnie Wood made riffs that complimented Jagger's voice and antics perfectly. In the end, you had the equivalent of a musical sex show.
I could go on about any band, but I don't want a 50 page post. Basically, there is no such thing as "overrated". If a lot of people enjoy someone's music, it's because they've brought something new to the table.
