The Beatles

Not that both aren't/weren't good, but highly overrated and not deserving of the international acclaim that they received.

The Beatles so not deserve it? You need to be smacked by a flying trout.

Nine Inch Nails

A couple of great albums in the 90s but have been milking faux-depression-core for the last decade. The fact that Trent is the interweb Jesus makes them overrated.

I made the same point about the Beatles. The Beatles were one of the top bands of their era, but they're forced on us as the best band ever in the history of the world, which is not so. They are probably one of the most historically significant yes, but their "historical significance" overshadows their actual talent. In fact I can think of plenty of other bands from their era that I find much more enjoyable to listen to.

Pretty much everything from the 1960s and early 70s is forced on us by the demographic brute force of the Baby Boomer generation. Their cars, their music, their drug culture, everything and it's all overrrated.

I'm sure it has alredy been said:

Nir-fucking-vana

Goddamn, I hate that group...I thought they were overrated when they came out, the best thing to come out of Nirvana was the Foo Fighters and even they are so-so.

Instrumentally there were far better guitar players, vocalists, ect. around at the time but what made the Beatles was their songwriting ability's and the production of George martin. While there is some truth in that the previous generation's music being forced when I listen to today's rock it mostly sounds the same, same vocal style, same electronic drums, ect. I would LOVE for something new to come along to "fill the void" and occasionally it does, I like Wheezer, Jimmy eat world, and a few others but I just don't see any band that can write the amount of quality songs the Beatles came up with..

They also introduced chord progressions, fusion, etc that was not used in pop music until the Beatles. A lot of it was George Martin's influence.

Not many bands can weather three distinct genres and succeed (bubble gum, psychedelic, hard rock).

True, it should also be noted that the Beatles and GM got some of their production ideas from Brian Wilson's "Pet sounds", McCartney admitted to "nicking" some ideas after hearing that album which IMO remains a masterpiece..

What? Nirvana was a great band. Obviously losing Cobain dealt a serious blow to the group. I think Grateful Dead is at the top of the list.

the dead have some great music
never been to a show
they probably should have stopped a long time ago

Yeah, as usual, people are confusing why music is significant with "I don't like them...so I can't understand why on Earth a huge population of other people don't feel the same way."

There is no point to these debates- everyone has different tastes in music. If you don't like a band that has been loved by millions (billions?) of people over the last half century, then you're just in the minority, that's all.

A quick rundown of what all the bands that people find "overrated" and what they actually contributed to music:

Pink Floyd- Brought concept music to the forefront. Their music has been lost in translation because albums like The Wall were actually one song that took up an entire double album (much like a symphonic piece would). Clips and pieces are played on the radio, and that's what people judge their music on- and it's a damn shame.

Led Zeppelin- Pretty much invented heavy metal. None of the hair bands of the 80's or grunge rock of the 90's would be around if not for them. People like to say "but they stole this and they stole that!" to knock them off their podium, but it's a weak argument. Jimmy Page took old blues songs and added riffs to them that have unmatched power and sexiness---to the point where people are still trying to play like him 40+ years later. Robert Plant's singing style was brand new---NOBODY sang like him before, but everyone has tried to copy him since. Jones and Bonham are musicians musicians and made rhythm sections that any band would kill for. Their first 6 albums have gone gold and platinum every year for the last 40 years because of this. Think about that for a while.

The Beatles- Their initial gimmick was they were British (ooo...exotic!) and good looking playing music that was forbidden in the heavy Christian valued USA. Then their creativity started to shine through and they switched to melodic composition. Their study of world music made them experts in melody---to the point that anyone can hum a few notes of one of their mid-era songs and recognize it. Melody is the basis for music (REMEMBER THAT RAP ARTISTS), and The Beatles created some of the most memorable melodies of all time. You probably hear their music in movie sound tracks every day and don't even realize it.

The Rolling Stones- They were the first band to sell sex, drugs, and rock n roll. They started out as a blues cover band, then Mick Jagger- who had the disadvantage of "being butt ugly"- started strutting around and shoving his ugliness in women's faces. His confidence and unusual style made him one of the most desirable men on the planet All of that jumping, dancing, swinging, etc he does on stage---nobody did that before. All of today's extravagant stage show antics were born from him. Keith Richards is probably the best rhythm guitarist on the planet. His freestyle, 5 string finger picking style is only used by him, and was only mastered by him. Ronnie Wood made riffs that complimented Jagger's voice and antics perfectly. In the end, you had the equivalent of a musical sex show.

I could go on about any band, but I don't want a 50 page post. Basically, there is no such thing as "overrated". If a lot of people enjoy someone's music, it's because they've brought something new to the table.

Saying Led Zeppelin is overrated is crazy. Stairway to Heaven is overrated but not the band. If you want to explain hard rock in two words there are no better words than "Led Zeppelin".

Their absolutely is such a thing as an overrated band. Some people may pick a band as overrated just because they dislike them, but arguments can be made against seemingly iconic bands.

Led Zeppelin is a sham of a band plain and simple and the most overrated band ever. Period. They are essentially a cover band.

I really dislike Pink Floyd, but they are still a good band and made inventive music. Same for The Beatles, except even more so as their contributions cannot be disputed (hard for me to find a song of theirs I actually like though). I quite like The Rolling Stones, their old stuff anyway, but as the progenitors to anything important to music? Not so sure about that. Regardless I would not call them overrated.

It's hard for you to find A SONG by the Beatles that you actually like?

My mind immediately floods with so many FINE FINE Beatles songs of radically different genres such that if you didn't like the first nine you'd surely have to like the tenth.

I am stunned. I feel like bitch slapping you with the double LP White Album and then denying you the bong on the next few passes. :awe:

My ex-girlfriend's three favourite bands were The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and The Beach Boys. She agreed with me that Zeppelin was overrated, even though she loved them, but she could not accept that I did not like The Beatles; we went on a mini road trip and she played them over and over in an attempt to convert me, even giving me all of the background behind every song (some of which is very interesting and I imagine I would enjoy reading a book on these guys) and playing lesser-known tunes, but it did not work. I don't hate them, but I would never ever listen to them and would change the station if they came on the radio.

Just one of those things I guess. :hmm:

When my brother and I were little kids, it seemed like nearly half of the suppers my mother prepared included mashed potatoes. Now, my brother eats baked potatoes, french fires, potato chips... but he despises mashed potatoes.
