What does appeal have to do with it? Also, if they have limited appeal, how can they be overrated? Half the people out there never even heard of the band.

What the hell type of logic is that? "Most people either don't like them or haven't heard of them, so obviously they are one of the greatest ever."

Part of being overrated is mass appeal. If you have no mass appeal, then having 10 fans claim your are the best thing since sliced bread does not make you overrated. SO, how are they overrated? While I am not a huge fan of Primus, they had an incredible drummer, and Les Claypool is just insane on the bass.

Again, like I said before, you're making your point based on their historical importance, NOT the quality of their music, which is still great, but is overshadowed by their historical importance.

It would help if you gave us your definition of "overrated".

IMO, "overrated" indicates that the band is held in higher regard than is merited. A band's quality - and their "rating" - need not be defined solely by technical virtuosity. Aspects such as creativity and cultural impact are certainly viable criteria for "rating" a band.

A band should only be evaluated by the quality of their music. Leave the historical importance to the historians.

It seems very obvious to call a band whose historical importance overshadows their music as overrated. If that statement is not agreed upon, it would be akin to calling the caveman who invented the wheel the greatest inventor of all time. Or Roger Bannister (first man who ran the 4 minute mile) the greatest runner of all time. Or Babe Ruth the greatest baseball player of all time (let's face it, he probably couldn't last a day in modern baseball). Or the Model T the greatest car of all time. You get my point.

Yes, I get your point, and it's foolish. Your point is that Roger Bannister, Babe Ruth, and the Model T are over-rated because they don't have the skills of 2010, right? Let's continue: Mozart - overrated. Lots of people can play the piano as well as he could. Sure, the symphonies he wrote were excellent at the time, and hell, he may have started doing that when he was 5 years old, but you should only judge his brilliance as a musician by his playing. (That's what you're saying, right?) I think explaining your own analogies to you might help you realize how wrong you are.

But, just because someone is innovative or first, doesn't mean they're going to be considered great either. Rick Dees became famous, in part, because of disco duck. Singing like a a duck talking was innovative - and his song was a huge success. But, that innovation didn't make him great.

I will second dave mathews.

So, I was visiting in another town one weekend and catching up with some old friends. We were discussing where to go for the night. One friend says we should go to some particular bar because there was a band there he wanted to see. A Dave Matthews cover band. He emphasized that this was the best of the bunch, in his words, "THE Dave Matthews cover band." I answered that I didn't care if it was THE Dave Matthews Band period, I still didn't want to hear that crap.
