the problem is that a bunch of things that cost a lot.. only offers a little improvement...

like a 1800dpi infrared mouse.... is only a bit better than a regular optical one

a dual grip mousepad made from fine rubber is only a bit better than just a regular pad of loom lol...

same with keyboards... the one with the little screen that let you know how much ammo you have... your health and such... is only for little help if any.... maybe they dont even help at all... is just something cool....

same with physics cards... they all offer insanely complicated and tons of particles and physics... but is for no improvement in gameplay, can you cover in the hell of tons of debris generated in an explotion???

and so on and so on...

they offer features and improvements... but just a bit... a bit should cost just a bit... if they manage to catch the attention of people....

is like bluray and dvd... people still like the standard dvd because they are satisfied with the dvd...

When my mouse got reviewed (logitech mx518 I think?) the reviewers said 1800dpi was too sensitive and almost universally recommended the second highest setting (900dpi?) I just run it @ whatever windows defaults to, since I dont need to program the buttons and therefore never install the Mouse console software.

thats other problem about high dpi rats.... they move so quick...

the marketing is... do more in less movement.. be quicker and win... or something like that... they just sell you the idea that high dpi and sensitivity is good because in little movement and time you can do the same or better than a regular rat... but in the end you lose control so quickly... omg!!!!!

i dig the mx518.

i use the lowest dpi actually.

what is really cool about dpi on the fly is that in 2142 when i jump into a rorsch, i tap the dpi up to 1800 and the gun spins around at a reasonable speed now

hop out, tap tap down, back to normal.

i would have never paid what they ask for it, but i love my FUNC 'competition mousing surface' or whatever they call it.

i won it during the launch of Athlon64, with that 64 days of daily 'scratch off' games.

You sir have never used a Diamondback w/an eXactMat. It's the best mouse+pad combo I've used yet.

I have the Exact Mat flipped over to the speed side with my g7 on it. Its so smooth.

Yep, definitely happy with my purchase of the eXactMat.

Trackball for life!

I was unbeatable at CS back in the day when I used my $60 logitech trackball. A buddy of mine who's about on par with me as a fps'er would usually be @ 1/2 or less my performance. Eventually my friends demanded I go back to a mouse because they considered the trackball to be cheating... so I'm gonna say Any gaming mouse. Trackballs are a million times better, largely because you never run out of mousing surface.

Can you post a link to the trackball you were using? All the trackballs I've seen look like they'd be hard to play with.

What does everybody think of the Logitech G3? I want to get a wired mouse because I don't want to have to deal with the batteries anymore and the G3 seemed like a good deal.

I bought an Icemat for 25 bux on Newegg, and it was severely dissapointing so much so that I went out and bought a 5 dollar hunk o junk from officemax. For starters the backing had fuzz and hair trapped under the paint. The sandblasted glass surface makes a scratching "slate dragging on slate" kind of noise. The thing makes your palm sweat and then when your sweat puddle dries it leaves a nice white looking blotch on the surface. Real classy....

On the other hand I went bonkers and spent $75 bux on a Logitech G9 gaming mouse and it's the sickest piece of hardware I have ever owned. Fantastic features, solid control and tactile feel, and looks that could kill. I tip my hat to the Logitech design team.

Steering wheels

I would love to get a trackball, but they're usually more expensive. I used a trackball a lot when I was kid, but good optical and laser mice came down in price and trackballs kind of remained expensive.

Ram that costs $630 for 2gb at time of review. There's literally no frame rate difference.

And I'll second the Windows Vista comment. It's a nice OS and I'm satisfied with buying it, but saying that it's better than XP for gaming is a lie since most people run games in DX 9 anyway. When we can run games in DirectX 10 without seeing a 50% drop in frame rate, that's we can start talking about DX10 being an upgrade.

Most UNDERrated PC accessories (whether gaming or 'productive)

* my Bill Gates voodoo doll with velcro attached appendages.

Very similar to the referee dolls still on the market.

googled to find it but it is obviously way way out of production, no doubt sued out of existant by the Gates Family of Lawyers(tm). There are even dozens of Patents on these types of dolls.

Vista nasty redundant warning messing: rip of an arm
Non responding OS task (aka BSOD in older OS): rip of his head

Not even counting the PC user market, someone could have sold 40 million of these things over the last two years, at least one for each XBox 360 owner for RROD stress release.

completely agree with any product that says Fatality (once he gets laid I'm sure he'll stop playing so many video games)

Soundblaster X-Fi with the XRAM (or whatever the hell they were calling it.)
Mice with more than 5 buttons, have a scroll wheel which tilts, etc (if you need that many buttons to play a game, you are doing it wrong)
Keyboard with programmable macro keys (same reason as above)
gaming lcds claiming <5ms response time (don't act like you can tell the difference between 12ms and 5ms without a high speed camera, plus they usually look like shit)
Trackballs (they suck, and you suck if you use one )

I would personally have to disagree with your second two. I use an ergonomic keyboard because otherwise my hands start to cramp up and I can't type any more. Expensive mice allow me to click quicker than I would on a normal 400 dpi Logitech.

I say the most useless things are the WolfPads or IdeaZon specialized gaming keyboards.

The Logitech MX518 is still the best investment I ever made for a piece of computer gear. 3 years later and it is still working although the rubber coating is pealing off.

The most overrated gaming product IMO is a "gaming" case that looks like it is less of a case and more of an atomic bomb.

This one kills me. A good gaming case is one that is big enough to fit an 8800 Ultra. Anything more than that is just bullshit.
(most cases cannot fit huge cards like an 8800 Ultra)

Definitely agree about the Killer NIC. It's not exactly a complete joke, but it certainly is considering its price point as its definitely more of a toy than a tool you can use to actually improve performance or gain legitimate advantage. If it was in the $50 range I'd certainly considering grabbing one.

Physx card is getting unfairly bashed though - yes, its pretty much useless, but if 3D hardware acceleration had never caught on there would be people saying the same thing about GPUs...the Physx card never turned into anything on its own but it certainly helped open the door to hardware accelerated physics processing (soon to be incorporated with video cards rather than a stand alone PPU card).

As far as responding to the OP, if you're paying $50 for a mousepad you're most likely paying for art customization as well as stronger materials so that the pad does not wear out like cheap cloth pads (or even slightly more expensive cloth ones or lesser quality 'high end' pads...)

I really hate those "Transformers" looking robot cases.
