Ars Technica said:
A few weeks ago, Ars wrote about a proposed class-action lawsuit targeting two of LG's flagship devices, the G4 and V10. The suit (PDF) complained of a well-known bootloop issue that either bricked the devices or slowed them to a snail's pace—all to the backdrop of warranties or LG failing to fix the problem. After we published the story, many Android fans were wondering why other LG phones that suffered the same issues were not included in the original lawsuit.

Wait no longer: the Southern California federal lawsuit has been amended (PDF) to now include the Nexus 5X, and the LG G5 and LG V20. The updated lawsuit covers every high-profile LG phone from 2015 and 2016.

My Nexus 5x has never had this problem. But should I be worried that it could fail at any moment?

I read that yesterday. Reading through the comments, A lot of people had to rma their nexus devices.

I just got a used lg3. It's a nifty phone, but I don't have as much confidence in as I did my s5. It chews through the battery, runs hot, and is overall more 'creaky'. Time will tell I guess, but it's made me appreciate samsung's build quality. I might go for a lower end samsung with a removeable battery next. Depends on how this works out, and what else is semi current.

Going to have to say yes unfortunately ... my 5x bricked without warning a couple weeks ago and literally 4 days past warranty expiration.

Good news is Fi replaced it with what I'm pretty sure is a brand-new one (man date 1/17) but I have no confidence in it at this point so planning on selling it.

Also gave me an excuse to upgrade ... went with an LG V20 and so far am very happy.

How does this defect manifest? Does the phone go into an endless boot-loop?

Was that intended to be sarcasm?

I wonder if this covers the G3. I'm looking for a replacement right now cause it's on its last leg. Started with it not recognizing the sim card (works just fine when I pop it back into my old iPhone 4s) and now it has the screen flickering and then fading to black. This is my first and last LG phone. My 4s is still ticking perfectly.

My 5x finally boot looped and died today. Say, how long is that warranty? I got it two years ago on Black Friday.

Picked up a Moto E4 to replace it. Due Amazon 2 factor authentication I had to pick it up from a different network's store and wound up saving $9/month too!

I'd call them. As bad as the bootloop issue was, I heard they extended waranties. I've had 3 LG phones and was burnt 3 times. When my G5 went into boot loop last year, that was it. I even still have a Note 2 that works, and my son uses it. I don't really have brand loyalty per say, but three times is enough for me.

Does that mean you couldn't re-flash with ADB?
What's ADB? I had no warning until the boot loop started. I tried putting the phone in the fridge, but it just died.

My 5x went the boot-loop route as well however I was still within the warranty period (barely) and Google replaced it. This was my 4th LG phone and the first to have problems so I went with a v20 to replace it which so far anyway has been good.

Sold the replacement 5x on Swappa.

I bought my phone from Amazon, not Google. From what I can find it only has a one year warranty. So I'm not going to try to return it.

I had one 5x I had purchased through Google play that died and would no longer be too. However, Google sent me a refurbished one for free despite being 8 months out of warranty.

Though, I decided to dodge future bullets with the 5x and did the trade in Project Fi was offering for the Moto X4 (and overall, have been quite happy with the change to the X4).

It is Android Debug Bridge (adb), useful for many things, one of them is, you can re-flash the phone or factory reset it, or replace the bootloader or...or...or...

LG extended the warranty on the 5x to 2 years specifically for this issue. I had mine repaired for free by LG after 1 year and 3 months.

Based on this I tried to register an RMA here. It says my warranty was only 1 year.

So what is it thats peculiar to LG phones that gives them this problem across generations?

The 5x defect was due to poor quality control. Solder points broke after heating up and cooling down with the heat of the phone, leading the devices to boot loop.

I'm not sure why that is. I bought my N5X from Amazon and it bootlooped well after a year (15 months). I filled out the same form and LG repaired the device for free last March after I mailed it into them. It also seems people are still getting repairs for free based on this Reddit thread https://www.reddit.com/r/nexus5x/comments/7fqqtc/who_has_sent_their_phone_to_lg_for_repairs/ .

You may want to sign up for the N5X arbitration class action, which applies to a number of LG phones, including the Nexus 5x.

That sounds like a "stick the circuit board in the oven" scenario!

I thought the same of my g4....took a year and a half and the issue hobbled my phone to a black screen in 24 hours. Luckily even not under warranty I could send it to LG on their dime to see how much it would cost to fix. They did a motherboard swap free of charge without contacting me.

Did you buy it with a credit card? My card extends the manufacturer warranty times on products I purchase. I believe that's a fairly standard feature with credit cards.
