And if it needs to be said, turn off System Restore before you start. One caveat to that would be if it is so badly infected that it won't run executable, trying an older restore point can help you get your foot in the door.
I don't get it... Turn OFF System Restore? Whats wrong with having it active?
Thanks for program recommendations. Appreciated.
Anti-virus programs are to computers as religion is to people. Everyone has their preference. I use Bitdefender free on one computer, Avira on another and Panda cloud on the desktop and the Dell mini 9.
I removed Bitdefender free on the desktop and installed Panda cloud. I couldn't believe the start up time difference. Night and day.
had a real bad experience with Avast slowing down the internet and everything was running sluggish!
YES -- it was the Avast!
As soon as I switched to BitDefender everything was like I had reformatted...super fast and smooth!
If you're using Microsoft Security Essencials, you might as well go bareback and turn it off, earn yourself some performance back (because it slows down the system too much anyway).
Microsoft Security Essencials can no longer be called an Antivirus.
Yup I call shenanigans, it is less obtrusive than any other antimalware.Just wondering, what exactly are the slowdowns you are seeing with MSE?

Well, I can't be bothered to look for links to said benchmarks, but it's not me saying: I have never, EVER, used Microsoft Security Essencials. Back in 2009, when MSE was actually GOOD, I was using ESET NOD32, which, at the time at least, was faster and lighter than MSE. According to the benchmarks. I have since dropped NOD32 in favor of avast!, which I now run, and, of course, I don't run MSE, because it's not an antivirus.Yup I call shenanigans, it is less obtrusive than any other antimalware.
Well, you do know that EVERY antivirus software slows down your computer, even if it's just by a tiny margin, right? Benchmarks show that MSE isn't as good performance-wise as proper antivirus software, like, I don't know, Avira, or avast!.

Try Webroot SecureAnywhere AV and you will change your opinion. It is light as a feather, don't even feel I have an AV installed, yet has very good behavioural detection and cloud based detection! Its entire installation folder is 743 kb
see how it works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKMZ1Ukw_7I
it's been improved vastly since then and their customer service is top notch, their forums are very helpful as wellI swore off Webroot years ago when it couldn't detect much anything and took way too many resources. I do hope they make a better product now, but too little too late for this user.
I am happy with MSE. Low resources, and since I don't download just any old thing, keeps me plenty secure.
