Most reliable 2TB hard drive to get in the $120 range?

Looks like my Seagate 1.5TB 7200.11 HD is dying. So I wanted to get another drive to back up all the day. I usually only buy Seagates but I am getting skeptical about them these days.

There seems be couple choices around $120 range. I was thinking of maybe getting another Samsung drive (F4 2TB). Anyone got recommendation of which one of these HD would be most reliable?

I am a big WD fan...but that isn't the answer...especially the refurb option...avoid those.

This is what you want:

The Samsung 2 TB drive is the BEST 2 TB drive out out there. I own 5 of them (along with various WD, Seagate and Intel SSDs...I haven't had a hint of a problem with them...I would run the Samsung diagnostics to be sure...as you should with any new hard drive these days.

Is Samsung still making the drives? I read they were Seagate's now and not as reliable.

This has to be the worst time ever for large capacity hard drives.

Newegg wants outrageous amounts for their WD Caviar Blacks.

The Samsung F4 2tb with the once excellent track record is no more, and is now being manufactured by Seagate, who almost definitely reduced the quality of parts. They had such little confidence, they dropped the warranty period to just 1 year instead of the 3 Samsung was offering. You can see the negative reviews rolling in already.

OH... and to make things worse, Newegg just pulled their entire HITACHI HDD lineup off their site.

What the hell is going on?? D:

Doesn't even seem like anybody even cares though. It seems the entire purpose of this forum section is simply to push SSD drives now.

Wow, that is just bizarre .. Dunno if the problem was only on my end..

But earlier today, I couldn't find a single HITACHI hard drive in stock on newegg, besides one retail drive.. and a manual google search would lead you to a link saying they are all "Out of Stock".

Now, it seems they are all back and available again.

In which case, I do think the Hitachi 2tb is the best choice, since the Samsung is now a Seagate, and WD's Caviar Blacks are so insanely priced.

I think it's a choice between Seagate 2TB 7200RPM for $110 and 1-year warranty, or WD Caviar 2TB 5400RPM for $115 and 2-year warranty. The next step up is a WD Caviar Black 2TB with 5-year warranty but it costs $190.

Don't forget the Hitachi 2tb's.. $150, but a 3-year warranty..

And we also have the WD20EURS.. yet another derivative of the WD Green drive, but with a 3-year warranty this time and less alarming low-egg-ratings than previous WD Green drives (ie: the abysmal track record of the WD20EARS)

I hadn't noticed about Seagate switching the drive...it really pisses me off that they did that...The Samsung F4 is awesome...according to the user reviews, the Seagate equivalent sucks.

As for the SSD deal...I would revise your statement to be that people push for SSDs as OS/boot drives...in that role, SSDs rock. For large, cheaper storage drives? No SSD is close to HDD for a 2 TB drive....

I first purchased two of the new Seagate 3TB drives in October and both died in a week. Then went to the WD Black 2TB, but found them noisy for use in a bedroom PC. So ended up with the Hitachi 2TB 7K3000 drive. They were $199 in Jan, but have seen it as low as $130 a week ago and had a $20 rebate. I've had no issues with the Hitachi in the 5 months I've been using them.
