I know people usually go gah , gah over Seagate but I have used Hitachi, WD, Maxtor , Seagate. THe only ones I had failed on me was a 80 GB Barracuda IV and just yesterday a 160GB Sata. Both Seagate. Time to revisit?

Every harddrive has the potential to die so don't expect it not to die just because you heard it ws the most reliable. Most people will say something is not reliable because it died on them. Also people who post ussually post if a harddrive fails. People don't just post everytime they get a component and it works. So I think there are more important factors then reliability, such as noise, performance and price.

It will completely depend on who you talk to.

In my own experience, Maxtors have a great return policy but die regularly. I have a Western Digital 7.8G that I still use after years, and all my other drives are WDs except for a couple Maxtors. I've never had a bad experience with WD but I'm sure you can find someone who has.

I get that but I am really an equal opportunity user when it comes to HD. I get whatever deal is going on so I get a good sampling. What I am saying is of all these HDs that I have used last 5 years, both have been Seagate. One is the Respected super quiet Barracuda IV and the other is supposedly a great Sata.

Seagate and Samsung are considered the best drives here then. Samsungs are like dead silent and then Seagates are the next quitest.

Western Digital for me, One of my Seagate's crapped out, then they replaced it with a factory repaired unit like they do for all their RMAs. It's stated in the RMA email.

Unfortunately WD, Maxtor, IBM, etc. also send out refurb drives (marked or not) when you do an RMA most of the time. In fact most RMA's, no matter what the part, will usually result in a refub part. After all you are sending them a 'used' part.

I'm always on the odd end of the spectrum here since I've had 3 out of 5 Seagates fail within a year. My experience with Maxtor, who royally sucks in most forums, has been near perfect in every way. I think over the past 10 years I've had at least 10-15 and only one went bad. All but 3 have been replaced with newer and larger drives. WD hasn't been too good for me either but I have 2 that are still doing fine. My current flavor of the month is Samsung. It's quieter than the Seagate it replaced and it runs great, but it's only 7 months old so it has a ways to go before I start shouting Samsung is the best. I'm not even sure there is a "best" hard drive out there.

Well for reliability WD takes the crown. Their drives are cheap and rock solid. Seagate is right behind them.

For noise Seagate takes the crown. Drives are faster and generally just as if not higher quality the WD, however Seagate uses Fluid Bearing which make them A LOT quieter. I would but Samsung right behind them.

Maxtors are known to fail, thats really all you can say about them. They are your average HDD manf, not really good in any aspect but decent all around; again they are known to be unreliable.

Samsung supposedly very quiet, almost as quiet as the Seagates, not quite as fast or reliable as the Seagates. The same goes for Hitachi. However IIRC Hitachi focus's more on Laptop HDD than desktop.

Having said this top three:
1. Seagate
2. Western Digital
3. Samsung
