Hi ,

I have 4 x 500GB HDDs in my system , but there nearly all full and there about 2 years old .

So im going to buy 2 x 1 Terabyte HDDs and transfer all my Data to them .

My system runs 24/7 because i run my TV/DVD Recorder etc through it , could anyone recommend what drive manufacturer is the most reliable and long lasting ?

I've had a lot of trouble with Seagate HDDs and swore id NEVER Buy Seagate again [ I bought 3 x 250GB HDDs 3 years ago and the 3 died within 6/8 months .

Also does anyone have an eSATA Drive running ? how do they compare to SATA II Drives ?

In short, there isn't one. They all fail, they all have success and horror stories. The best thing to do is pick one that is in your price range with a good warranty, and back up your data.

It's more Luck-Of-The-Draw on the particular HDD you get in the box, more than the manufacturer who made it.

eSATA is just like SATA II, but for running them external to the computer instead of internal. If I went external, I would want something with a fan and that sits horizontal. All those external hard drives that stand up on an edge are just a bump away from dying, IMO.

eSATA is completely identical to SATA.
You can run a cable from your SATA plugs to a bracket.
And you can run internal drives plugged to an eSATA port just sitting outside of the computer.

With eSATA if I need to mess around with drives I just sit one on a peice of paper, and plug it to the bracket (which leads to the mobo's internal SATA ports).

Anyways, forget buying a long lasting drive. Simply use RAID1. Then your data is safe regardless.
Also, always break in drives... that is, full format them, fill them up, leave them spinning for 3 days straight. then read the data... if they didn't break from that they will last for many years

also I am pretty sure seagate has one of the highest longevity (statistically speaking).
So if you think THEY are crappy... well good luck using anything else.

Just accept hard disk failure as a GIVEN and start making backup. I generally buy the cheapest HDD of a specific size I want, (with quality warranty) and let backup (or raid1, which is ultimate backup) protect my data.
