Honestly, I've never had a pistol misfire. I've had failure to feed, but only with my .22.

Failures to feed and eject are probably the only two issues you'd ever run into. Both are very often attributed to the kind of ammo, as some guns are picky. Some magazines are also picky.

As mentioned already though, the Glocks, springfields, sigs, and higher end 1911's have very few issues if ever after the break in period.

And to whomever asked about finding a glock with a manual safety : The only one I can think of that is remotely similar to the glock with a manual safety is -some- models of the springfield XD's. I have a 4" XD .45 with the manual safety, and I can't imagine not having it. But apparently they are rare, and there are only select models that offer it. If you're worried and you want another safety other than your finger, look at the sub compact XD's as they offer a backstrap safety that blocks the firing pin until depressed.

When I started buying guns again, one of my cop friends said to just buy a Glock, he said they'd had Glocks dropped, run over by cars, thrown, you name it and never broken one yet...

He was right, I'd throw Sig in there too.

What if you shot the glock with the sig?

I have, with the Berettas they gave us in the Navy, which were second hand from the Army, and third hand from the Marines. They had tens of thousands of rounds put through them, and the firing pins were changed maybe once or twice. Made me not like guns any more.

"i cant answer you, everything by everyone breaks at some point"

awesome advice.

i never said that. stop putting words in my mouth.

i told him that they are all quality guns. quality = reliable. i also mentioned that even the most quality products can run into problems.

so where's your advice? i don't see it posted. all i see is you trolling.

The Springfield XD9 is very similar to the Glock 19. Springfield always brings up the backstrap safety when comparing it to the Glock. It doesn't have a safety switch, but the backstrap safety prevents it from possibly catching on something that pulls the trigger because you must be gripping the gun for it to fire.

I still wouldn't worry too much about it. I have a Glock 19 myself and you can't really shoot it without trying. When I hear about accidental shootings I always shake my head. They are so easily preventable with just a tiny bit of common sense and training. You could fit all the really important important gun safety rules on a notecard. Having a manual safety switch won't prevent accidental shootings if the person holding the gun doesn't bother learning a few basic rules.

thx, I'll check that gun out. If it doesn't feel right I'll just get that glock.

The most reliable semi-auto is the one with quality magazines and an owner who keeps the gun cleaned and oiled.

FWIW, I was with my friend cleaning his Glock, he dropped the slide onto the tile floor from about counter height. it bent the right rear guides enough that it wouldn't slide on the gun anymore. I don't know how another mfgr would have fared under similar circumstances but we were both pretty pissed.

in other news, what's the consensus on the CZ 75 B?

Deadlyapp - I considered one but I was looking for something thinner... so I went the single stack route. And it was $259... can't really go wrong there.

Binarycow - check out www.budsgunshop.com - they shipped my PF-9 same day.

I went ahead and bought that glock 19 9mm for $460 at glockworld. It's about 80 bucks cheaper than local stores plus no tax.

Olds, I recommend the 357 Sig chambered Glock 32?

I picked up a conversion barrel for my 22C and prefer it over the .40 by quite a bit...

I have a quick question about handguns (don't mean to hijack this thread). The Glock 19 Pistol, PI1950203, fits my hand perfectly and is legendary when it comes to durability (from what I have read). My only thing is it doesn't have a safety switch. Is there another 9mm that's basically as much similar to it but comes with a safety switch? I'm willing to spend up to around 800 bucks. Also, any recommended online gun dealer for it?
Springfield makes a pistol in the XD line that does have a safety switch. I'm not sure of the model/caliber though. I have an XD-9 and love it FWIW.

I love my Glock's, up to three now. You don't need a manual safety. Keep your finger off the trigger and it won't go boom. It's not a hard concept.

Older Smith & Wessons like my 3913 will feed rocks if you can get them in the magazine. Bullet proof reliability.

Glocks are great pistols. I had a G22 issued to me that I put about 15,000 rounds through over the course of about 3.5 years (reconditioned at about the 12000 round mark - new springs). I recall one stoppage during that time, which was attributable to me kind of limp-wristing it from a funny shooting position. So I have no doubts a Glock will work when you need it.

On the other hand, I observed a few of our SWAT guys having trouble with Springfield Armory 1911s a few times on the range, and observed them walking around the office carrying Glocks because their 1911s were in the shop. It happened often enough (3-4 times was enough) that it really made me think about whether their pistols were getting worn out, or if that rate of occurrence relative to the Glocks was normal/typical. Either way, I'm convinced that if you need a workhorse Glocks are a great way to go.

I just got a S&W 1911. I have to say it's just as nice as most of the Springfield 1911's I've seen (the ones sub 1100 bucks).
