most stable windows 98 version ?

i got a rather old system that im trying to get running decently for a friend, its a P 2 - 350 mhz with 256 mb ram, ive installed XP on it and it runs decently but i got several problems with it -

- one being that the onbaord video has no direct x drivers for XP [only 98]

-and two is that both of the hard drives are PIO only, both drives are 2 gig and i think that is what slows XP down alot.


So im figuring that going to win 98 would be a good choice, but before i do it i want to make sure of a few things -

- would 98 be faster than XP using PIO mode drives [xp takes 4 min to boot] ?

- and what is the most stable version of 98, ive heard of a 98 lite and a 98 SE aswell as regular 98...i hear different things on each but i just want the most stable version.

OK 98 would smoke XP with PIO drives anyday lol. Also 98SE (Second Edition) is the best as it is the latest and I think its the fastest and most stable. 98 should run great on that system!

98SE or Win2k With 98SE being the faster(Albeit less stable) of the 2.

Those drives will slow down anything, Not just XP..The worst thing that slows down XP is a lack of ram. 256MB minimum, 512MB being perfect on the price/performance ratio.

I'd have to say win98SE. If possible, I'd pick up a cheap 10-20gb harddrive from the FS/FT forum as those HDs will be your biggest bottle neck.

Windows 98SE works well with older machines, and I agree with Torghn about the hard drive.

98 Lite is a 3rd party thing that lets you get rid of the nasty stuff in 98. You can install 98SE then buy 98 Lite to remove stuff like the IE shell. Then it should run pretty smoothly.
