In BG2, I say
yojimbo (or whatever that thief's name was)

Yoshimo (pronounced Yo - Sheeee - mo)

As for me, I guess
Aribeth
from NWN 1 OC is the only one that springs to mind at the moment. Of course you do have a choice in that case, but...

Also the above mentioned character from BG2.

Oh, I was playing F.E.A.R. Extraction Point last night and it's not like there is much character development or that you had spent enough time with
her
to care, but you spent half the game trying to get to
her
to save
her
, then when you finally reach
Jin Sun Kwon, she
got killed 5 seconds before, it sucks.

Ghost and Roach
I know a lot of people didn't like the single player in that game but I was really attached to them by the time they were killed off.

I agree about feeling bad about them. What even made it worse, the plot didnt really seem to make sense why they were killed, at least to me. Maybe i missed it.

I have to say though that the overall plot was extremely improbable. It seemed more like a series of arcade levels patched together.

Okay, so why do we need spoilers for games that came out like 15 years ago? Sorry, but if you haven't played those games yet, too bad.

You can't be serious.

With the at-times pathetic state of modern gaming classic games are being revived more and more nowadays, and when you're talking about "tragic" characters you're obviously referring to games that rely on plot points to make an emotional impact.

Just because you don't care don't spoil it for gamers that do.

I usually play a good character like another poster mentioned, and then an evil one, but never have I felt bad for my actions. Even the most immersive game is still a game to me, and to me I'm making the choice how to play to see what is different, over feeling some moral dilemma.

However, there are many characters I would loved to have killed. The little whiny kid from FF13 tops my list.

If you play a Death Knight in WoW, there's this one quest early on in the starting area where you have to kill a prisoner to show your allegiance to the Lich King. This prisoner turns out to be someone you knew in your past life. When you tried to kill them, they tried to remind you of who you were, how you were good friends/family/mentored by them and how good a person you were in your past life. But of course you'll still have to kill them in the end.

Doing this part always bothers me.

i once played this japanese game where you constantly have sex with a house full of girls, and at the end you marry one of them. i wound up with the little girl, but the one i wanted was the teacher. does that count?

Ah yes. The family classic "whore house sitter 6". A great fireside game.

What? They got off'ed because
They found evidence that would have connected the current Commander of the US troops to the terrorist attacks

That game had a great story line - something many games of its genere are severely lacking nowadays.

It was still highly improbable. I think those two deaths though were well made and despite all the hubbub made over the massacre in the airport that hit me harder then slaying the civilians.

I don't understand what being improbable has to do with following the story line? Most great games I've played are improbable - doesn't change the impact the storyline has.

The person I quoted missed something important, why the story line didn't make sense to him (possibly even watering down the event he described in my opinion.) Probability of the script taking place has zero relevance.

In Gears of War 3 -
DOM dies (although I hope he comes back! Seems like they may have left this as a possibility)
and then WHY did
Marcus Dad have to die???? Dude had no one left!

lol you should really warn about that or spoiler it. I know it's hard to believe, but there have to be some gamers out there that don't know about her yet.

Need to clean up your quote now

In response to your post -

Dom was a broke dick dog, but he went out like a boss.
And Marcus has Anya, Giggity!

I always feel bad when I play as evil in the fallout games, and have to kill the characters that had my back, or I just got along with, during the good guy play through.

What about when you have to kill the "
burnt to a crisp" leader of the Dark Brotherhood - Skyrim
. I seriously thought my character would end up nailing her sooner of later. Nope. ... game makes you stab her in the chest =(

i'm a girl so it's prolly ok if i admit this, but that part makes me cry. not full on sobbing, but i definitely get all misty eyed and tear up. :'(

also, the quest in dragonmaw where the guy cuts off his hand to give it to you for 'proof'. i always felt so bad about that quest.

They didn't put a lot of thought into designing the quests in WoW, besides trying to figure out what might be entertaining to do in a praticular place and time.

I thought it was a little ridiculous that as an orc (or troll) you are asked to save some plainstriders that have been stranded by a river flood by scaring them over to the other side of the river where they will be safe. Next thing you know, you are on the other side of the river doing a quest to kill the same plainstriders that have been interfering with the caravans.

Even on the alli side, usually the elves will be like "do this quest, but please don't hurt the wildlife, they are so precious," on one hand, and on the other they are like "kill it, but it's really okay, because it is beyond redemption (or, it was threatening us, or some other lame-ass excuse)."

I always do feel bad about the whole outcome of the Westfall questline, though.

Well, I understood that, but it just seemed still very strange that such a patriotic person should suddenly align with the terrorists.

And I still think the plot of COD4 was head and shoulders above MW2. I mean, one person taking over a nuclear submarine and launching one and only one nuclear missle at a city on American soil, and then escaping. Like they say on Monday night football "c'mon man". It also seemed so artificial that almost every choice in the game was not right vs wrong but choosing the lesser of two evils. Almost like they were trying too hard to make a gritty, morally ambiguous game because making tough choices in a game is cool or something.
