My 80s Tubes story. I went to see them at merriweather post pavilion and Todd Rundgren warmed up for them. So many people came to see Todd and then seemed a bit turned off by the theatrical show the Tubes put on. I have nothing against him, but it kindo ruined one of the most over the top shows I've ever seen.

I love the Tubes, got all their stuff and still play it. I think their stage show is why they're so underrated. They always had such a reputation for their outrageous antics that anyone who didn't stop to listen to them would easily overlook that there was good music behind the dancing girls and wild sets. They were a band born too soon, if they had come around at the beginning of the MTV age they would have been better appreciated.

Toy Dolls

they were great, shame that they had that punk image, puts people off a lot.
They were good, a lot of fun, somewhat loopy, though. Saw them live.

I'll nominate Half Japanese. They just put out a new album ("Perfect"), they still have that edge.
The Tubes
Tubes really are rockin' and hell of smart. I say are, because I believe they still gig sometimes.

I have never seen The Tubes live but imagine it was over the top. Now I did see The Bonzo Dog Band, and for sure that was by far the most over the top show I've ever seen. That was about 1969.

and Rory Gallagher (While Rory is HIGHLY acclaimed and worshiped by guitarists over the world, his works are barely known outside of musicians)

I'd say the punk band called "Death."

They more or less created their own punk band in 1971.
Almost 40 years later they finally crept up from the underground.

Nobody else was playing anything like their stuff in the early 70s. They were visionaries, way ahead of their time.

Split Enz

Tim Finn's solo work is good too, especially his 1989 NZ-flavored self-titled CD. Sadly his little brother (who is also quite talented) gets all the attention in the states.

Goodness / Carrie Akre

Grant Lee Buffalo / Grant-Lee Phiilips

Leave him be. The Yardbirds just started coming over AM radio last month.

monggrel's band

I had to laugh a few times there.

Once upon a time I was pretty freaky good, my musicianship isn't up to par these days.

+1, but pretty much the Swamper's recorded a lot of things in the past.

I was always a RUSH fanatic.

Their R&R Hall of Fame induction was pretty epic, so they are not completely unrecognized these days I guess.
