Soldier of Fortune 2 got good reviews but was never as popular as other shooters of the time, which is sad because it is a far superior game to something like Counterstrike.

Vanguard: SOH is actually a pretty great game if you can ignore a couple engine issues and bugs. If it had the population to sustain it, I'd play it. Maybe if they drop down to one server and cram everyone in I'd resub. Not worth the money to play an MMO by yourself.

Titan Quest is a great game, but it is in no way underrated. Way better than Diablo and I don't expect Diablo 3 to be better. It is so sad that piracy killed the developer. A solid game with a solid expansion, anyone who doesn't have it should go pick it up at D2D right now. Another game in that genre is Sacred, and another developer that bit the dust. Diablo 3 will finally be released after all their competition is gone. Blizzard'd success has a lot to do with their timing

QFT. The best RPG I've ever played, even though it's not an RPG.

Soldier of Fortune Payback. The level design is a bit generic, but the weapon selection and implementation is outstanding. There are so many weapons to choose from that there?s a multi-tiered menu to access them.

Also the outdoor graphics are amazing, almost rivaling Crysis in some places. The gore is over the top too, with Havok making limbs and gore fly everywhere. I enjoyed this game far more than Call of Duty 4.

Evil Twins, don't know if it ever even came out in the US. I found the UK one in Ebay. Was better than Beyond Good & Evil, which was a good game. Definitely one of the best platform games I've ever played. I have no clue why it wasn't a smash success. For the time it had awesome graphics, a great story, good dialog and was just fun as fuck. The few reviews I found just boggle my mind, I had so much fun with it.

It was buggy as hell (like all Troika games), fortunately it was fun enough to more than make up for it.

I just got it working on Vista64 with rig in sig.
I had originally played through it on a P4 with a 7600GT agp and it was not very fluid but I loved it.
This time however it's fantastic with a GT260 and an i7-920. It was underated when it was first released. It's had at least two very large patches, over a gig each I think.
It's kind of a pain to get it to work in 64bit. Steam sys requirements even say it's not for 64 bit.
You have to install the original physx drivers to get it to install. Later you can install the latest nvidia divers with new physx drivers but to complete the game's install, from the cd anyway you have to use the cd's physicx drivers.
Graphics are very good even today. Green smoke for a safe LZ and ammo stashes!
Weapon upgrades are cool too.

It's funny how some games got overshadowed by others and now the underdogs are looking pretty good now, especially when so many new games just aren't as good as their hype.

I loved Pod Racer too. Still have the cd.

Huh? I installed it off the disc on my Vista 64 rig and it runs without problems.

Ah, fond memories of Titan Quest and the Immortal Throne expansion. Definitely a fun game. I spent many hours with my grandson (started about 11 years old) killing monsters and going online to trade and obtain the best items. He was actually quite good at the game.

There are a lot of really cool glitched items if you want to use them. Also a game that is not over the top in the use of blood, sex, and drugs. It is nice to have a teen rated game that a younger person can play that is not something like My Little Pony!!

Supreme Commander. Best RTS to date, probably still will be better than Starcraft 2 (although maybe not the subsequent and inevitable custom games).

hell to the no. SupCom is nowhere near Starcraft. I was bored quite quickly.. especially with all those organic units that respond in a non-robotic way....

A guy named Drog Black Tooth made an awesome patch for Arcanum that fixes every bug that was fixable. He also made a high-res patch in the same tradition as the one made for the IE games. Both work great. The only thing that remains unfixed is the ridiculously unbalanced combat, which, unfortunately, Drog won't touch.

Look for the patch here.

I would have to say X2.

I saw Oni mentioned; I bought that with Rune in a two pack and I've never tried it. As a matter of fact, I totally forgot about it. I should dig it up one of the these days.

Speaking of which, I would put Rune on the list. I had a lot of fun with that game.

I evidently enjoyed Peseus Mandate a lot more that most other people did.

Dirt Track Racing and DTR 2 are incredibly fun racing games.

Vampire got overlooked because it was a horribly buggy mess when it came out. Only after
a plethora of patches was it actually playable. But your right, it is a great game.

Indeed, IIRC the game shipped with a game breaking bug. Even after the official patches, I still got hit by the "wait" bug. Thankfully, it has a sizable mod community that has fixed most of the bugs that existed after the official patching process ended. Probably one of the best FPS/RPG hybrids ever made.

i honestly can't think of any games i've played that would be considered highly underrated.

i'm such a picky asshole that i might hate a game with universal acclaim, let alone one that has multiple problems cited in reviews, so i don't usually bother.

Unreal 2 and Deus Ex: Invisible War come to mind. U2 has a ton of variety in its level environments, weapons and enemies, better than almost any other FPS I've seen, so I neverstood why the reviews were fairly mixed. DXIW is nothing like the first game, but it still has a lot of good ideas despite all its flaws. I think it's well above average among FPSs in general, even if it pales in comparison to the first DX.

Battlezone (1998)

This game was very highly rated back then. Battlezone 2 is a better example, as many people didn't like it due to a weaker story and the very poor engine performance for its time. The gameplay is a lot better in many ways though, and we haven't seen any game like it since then. It still has a fairly active community and some of the original developers continue to maintain the game today.

Neverwinter Nights 2. It wasn't quite as good as the first one and was a buggy mess when it first came out. Those who snubbed it for its high system requirements and bugs should go back and check it out now.

You do have to download about an hour worth of patches though, thankfully it has an auto updater so you don't have to go look all over the internet for patches.

Savage and Savage 2, by s2 games. the game actually got fabulous reviews and quite a few awards, but for some reason, very few people bought it

edit: the game is free now! http://www.s2games.com
