Sockets are the interface for the CPU. Almost all CPUs have now converted back to sockets from slots. For Intel CPUs, namely the P3 family, they use a socket 370 format with 370 pins. The original P2s and P3s used a slot interface. Finally, if you want the latest Intel chipset motherboard, a board based on the 815 with or without integrated video is probably the best. There are also some good boards based on the Via chipsets. Athlons are definitely worth looking at though.

hm... to find out about motherboards...i would just visit most of the big hardware sites,... anandtech,hardocp,sharkyextreme,etc... and just read their motherborad reviews... after a few you'll have picked up some terminology and a good grasp of general features and such...

my personal setup and recommendation:

Abit SA6R (a lil pricey, but well worth it)

hahaha, tweaking? setting up bios? dude, first get a clear understanding of how a motherboard operates with hardware and things like that then go and mess around with one!

i mean c'mon, you dont even know what a socket is!

Supradude: and the sah6 is tooooo expensive, with unnecessary video support, but hey thats the price you pay for getting a mobo with the lame i815e chipset.

bko: My suggestion is to get the Asus CUSL2-C just because it is far more stable than any Abit motherboard, just from what i hear.

Take a look at Apushardware (maybe they changed their name to Icrontic?). On the top of the page where it says "Fetured sections" you have a link to a very good KT7 FAQ - try it! Here's the direct link, btw.

For an Intel processor, get a Asus CUSL2-C, which is based on the i815 EP chipset.
