OK, not ALL of them suck.

But the ones that squander $160,000 in life insurance money in 1 year, start surfing the internet for a new husband 1 month after theirs dies, marries one after meeting in person once, falls for online money laundering scams, won't apply for SS survivor benefits because she's too prideful to accept money from the government, squanders another $15,000 in life insurance money in 3 months when her mother dies, can't hold down a job, calls at least once a month after 10pm crying because she doesn't feel good and wants someone to sit with her (eats too much candy to artificially raise her blood sugar for sympathy), and begs for money all the time but refuses to sell her computer and LCD TV to pay rent because "she has sacrificed enough."

Cliffs:

My mother in law is the bane of my existence.

UPDATE 7/13:

Went to MIL's apartment last night to get her computer and TV and replace with the ones we're giving her. The night consisted of her sobbing and crying while my wife and I worked. My sister in law was also there and she had to throw in her two cents about things not being fair for mom. (SIL is a 40 year old, twice divorced cat lady with no kids who can't hold down a job, bankrupt, overgrown kid that has to spend every dime she earns on CDs and DVDs) I had to leave early so wifey finished switching over the computer while MIL and SIL bitched and moaned. At least the MIL volunteered some more things to sell she had lying around like an unopened 200GB HDD, Total Gym, and camera accessories.

We just hope this serves to both discourage her from asking us for money again and to motivate her to stop burning through cash once she gets it. Though, at age 60, that's probably not likely. She has FINALLY applied for SS survivor benefits (FIL passed away 5 years ago) so hopefully that will help her out.

What a great way to spend an evening!

UPDATE 8/26:

Amazing. Truly amazing. Just when I thought this woman might have a small fraction of sanity left she pulls this gem.

I've sold nearly everything -- the computer, TV, camera, etc. -- and so far I've recouped $540 of the $630 we gave her. This past weekend at me and my son's birthday gathering at our house with a few relatives on my wife's side, the MIL began asking us how much of her stuff has been sold, how much we got, etc. in front of everyone. My wife politely and sternly told her to drop it. Birthday party continues.

MIL sends wife a text message late Monday night after we went to bed complaining that she wouldn't talk to her about money at the party on Saturday. Wife reads the text on Tuesday morning but doesn't respond. We had to take our new dog to the vet after work then she drove alone to her sister's over an hour away to get a kennel for our dog while I stayed home with the kids since I had to VPN into work.

Wednesday morning wife gets a suicidal "goodbye" voicemail from MIL because wife obviously doesn't care enough to talk to her, we don't trust her because we made her give us collateral for paying her July rent, etc. Wife gets PISSED and calls cops for wellness check visit. MIL is, naturally, fine.

Wife proceeds to chew out MIL. MIL begins rehashing old BS like how her and FIL (when he was alive) bought diapers and formula for our son when he was a baby because we had little money. I was in school full time while wife supported us. She claims had they not done that, she would have that money today which is complete bullshit.

Then.... then she mentions how last time she was watching our kids that our 5 year old daughter had said I said I didn't want my wife talking to the MIL again (which I never said). Wife tells MIL not to believe everything a 5 year old says.

MIL then says "what if we hadn't believed you when you were 5 and told us your grandfather was molesting you?"

I then told my wife I will never speak to her mother again.

What dose your lady (one of the reason's you're in this situation, you being the other) have to say about it?

i disagree but i know TONS of people who HATE or strongly dislike their in-laws.

if OCN and i married and i had the right to call his family my "in-laws" i am certain that things would be swell. his family is wonderful and love me and my daughter very much and vice versa.

OCN hasnt really ever had the chance to be around my family because they are all out of state.

but damn, im sorry your mother in-law is an insane bitch

Mothers, in general, get crazier as they get older. Don't worry, you're not the only one that suffers. Others just don't talk about their problems.

We're actually all crazy.

Agree. Don't give in.

I don't. Wife is on the phone right now with MIL telling her we will not give her $600. We will, however, help her sell her computer (e6550, 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD, 22" LCD), 20" LCD TV, and Canon SD870 digital camera and that will pay for most of it. Then we will give her a P4 1.8GHz 512MB computer, 17" CRT, and 25" CRT TV for free to replace them. We also got her a Canon C813 for Xmas so she won't be without a camera.

I can hear the MIL crying on the phone right now.

Might want to see if the warranty is still valid for her, maybe she hasn't hit her mileage yet.

I AM a mother-in-law. If that lowlife, sleazy sorry-excuse-for-a-human-male doesn't treat my daughter right, I am his worst enemy, I'll make his life a living hell.

As long as he continues to adore her, take good care of her, raise their two (soon to be 3) children with the love and attention that he does, works hard to keep the bills paid, stays in school one class at a time to get that advanced degree, and so on, and make us all laugh with his crazy sense of humor, I'll hold off on the brimstone.

Sometimes it's fun to be an in-law.

I've got a real deja-vu thing going on with this thread. Seems like there was an epic thread way, way back about the same subject.

The difference here is that your life doesn't appear to be in a bipolar spiral of death.

Her mother had Alzheimer's and we suspect she's developing the same thing.

At least she listened to reason tonight. We convinced her to accept our offer and she even suggested a couple other items of hers we help her sell.

Anyone want a computer, 22" LCD, 20" TV????

Normally I'm a big fan of periods. In this case, the commas were necessary. Good luck!
