Wife wants me to build her a desktop as her 5 year old laptop does not cut it too good for gaming and most she plays WoW.

I'm a AMD fanboy so it must be a AMD AM3 and right now don't know about cpu as the cpu and video card will be the last items on my list but would like to have a newer board that supports USB3 and Sata6.

Have been eyeballing the ASUS M4A89GTD PRO. There wont be any OC but would like to have one that can unlock cores but is not a got to have feature...Any recommendations on a good board? Thanks!

Thanks you, pages bookmarked and now looking at. Actually went and ordered the MSI 870A-G54 AM3 from neweggg and used promo code EMCYVZT43 to take off another $20 So now its a hot deal with the rebate of $10...can't be beat for $70

Sounds good...I hope you got the correct type of RAM, that can be a sticky point these days, since we're transitioning from DDR2 to DDR3.

I have not gotten either a cpu or memory yet. I'm looking at what was mentioned above about the AthlonII X3 440 Rana 3.0GHz and waiting on a deal and will buy the memory last as prices are falling and heard they may keep falling till the end of year.

It's doubtful they'll continue falling until the end of the Year. They almost always start falling early after New Years and continue falling until approx Sept, then they start Increasing up until XMas. You can almost set your Calendar by it.

While AMD's CPUs are good, you should stay away from their chipsets (at least if you are planning to use SSDs now or in the future), since AMDs implementation of AHCI (or their drivers) just svck.

Fail.

Ya, we get it, you had some issues with an AMD AHCI Driver. Get over it already.

What you want him buy an antiquated nvidia chipset instead?

AMD chipset drivers are fine, but I would advice against using the AHCI driver as well. Though from the sounds of it there's no way she'll be using an SSD.

Far as value goes, a 870 board from a good manufacturer is a good base. Then probably throw an athlon ii x3 or x4 in it and get yourself 4GB of ripjaws and you ought to be set. For a video card a 48xx would work, but I'd say go with a 5770; especially if you don't mind getting one second hand off the forums for 120-140. Or look for a newegg combo.

Also what resolution is she playing at? If it's especially high or low it might change recommendations slightly.

I have been using AHCI on my GAM785GM-US2H without issues for 6 months and can hot swap my drives on a docking station all day with a problem......but I'm not using AMD drivers for it.

870 Chipset, get MSI, Gigabyte or ASUS and you can't go wrong. The Biostar 890FX packs a lot of value, but it's a Biostar...
