motherboard bad?

A friends computer all of a sudden stopped working a week ago: you would turn it on, see nothing on the screen (monitor says no input signal) and then it would start beeping viciously until you turned it off. I went over to fix it and had no idea what to do, so I took all the expansion cards out and re-inserted the memory. Now it boots up with all the expansion cards back in and everything looks good, except the mouse doesn't move and the keyboard has no effect. I am using the friends mouse on my comp right now so the mouse (and I'm sure the keyboard) is fine. Help?

just to make sure (guessing the mouse and keyboard are PS2) , you checked that they were in the correct ports ?

yes. this is on a Gigabyte 8IE533 by the way. 2.4 Ghz P4 and 512 crucial ram. just the fact that it boots up and i see the desktop means the cpu is fine, right? i think a part will have to be replaced, but i want to make sure i'm replacing the right part.

Are you sure that its not just a driver problem? When you get to desktop hit windows key+pause/break and go to the device tab and look for any yellow flags.

No input is detected from the Keyboard or the mouse, but the system goes on as normal, ie internet ads pop up, virus notification pops up, etc. this wouldn't have anything to do with the virus would it...and if so how am i supposed to fix it when input doesn't work. but i doubt it's the virus since this other thing happened where the machine wouldn't even get to the BIOS

try clearing the CMOS , check the PS2 connections and try to get to the bios. if it won't , it sure sounds like the PS2 ports are gone. i think some MB's used to have a very small fuse that could be blown .

well this isn't some kind of ancient motherboard, it's pentium 4 2.4Ghz, but thanks for the advice i'll post back after today's visit.
