Motherboard Chipset Question for ASUS boards

I recently asked for advice on the ASUS A7M266 motherboard and it sounds like a great board for the 1.33 GHz AMD T-Bird with 266 MHz FSB. The other question I have about is is, how is the chipset on it? I noticed it does not have the VIA KT266 chipset. The ASUS says it has the AMD 761 + VIA VT82C686B. How do these chipsets compair? I also see, that AMD does not recomend any mobos that use the VIA KT266 chipset for their 1.33GHz chips or their 1.4 GHz chips. I think I want to stay with what they recomend this time, after achieving failure with the MSI K7T266 PRO - RAID (MS-6380). It fried two 1.4 GHz chips, not even letting me use them. I am going to exchange that mobo for something more reliable. For some reason it is not recomended by AMD either, although the board says it will handle that chip, oh well. I just need advice on how to build the best system possible and aslo stay within the limits of a stable system. Any other boards you recomend to look into for this processor? Thanks

The AMD 761 chipset seems to be the performance leader now until the SIS chipset starts shipping. Do a search on A7M266 and you will see dozens of threads talking about it. The drawback of that board over the Epox 8K7A is that it does not have multiplier settings unless you modify the board and it's price.

the amd 761 chipset is probably the best current choice for socketA, kt266 is probably the next choice with the ali magik at the bottom of the list

and i will second his suggestion of the epox 8k7a, its based on the same chipset (amd 761)

the gigabyte 7dx is also a good board

The A7m266 uses both the AMD 761 - called the northbridge.
And the VIA 686B - called the south bridge.
Together, the North bridge and South bridge are called the chipset. That's where the set part comes in. In this case, it is a hybrid chipset, because chips from 2 different manufacturers are used.

Just built my first AMD box....Epox 8K7A...1.2Tbird...running stock....You can't go wrong with the Epox board...Was so easy to setup that I thought I was working on my OLD BX board.
