errr.. that combo is very very tempting !!

i looked on the overclockability of that board, however and its not that great . but do ppl o/c more than 232fsb on these cpus? hmmm

on agp/pci lock?.. perhaps it might not be a good board to o/c much with.. oh well

From Anandtech's review:

"The above overclocking setup at default voltage, the only voltage option on the 755-A2, allowed us to reach a stable FSB of 222. This matches the highest overclock that we have seen with this early production Athlon 64 3200+, and is really outstanding overclocking performance for a board with very limited overclocking options....Despite the paucity of OC controls, the ECS 755-A2 is a very fine overclocker among Athlon 64 boards."

Essentially, you would be buying the Athlon 64 3200+ and getting a fairly decent motherboard for free. What more do you want?

If so, they were either listed as "Not Available" or "Call for Availability" because I've been monitoring Outpost's combo deals twice daily since Dec. 30, today is the first I've seen them. I skip over any items whose availability status doesn't read "in stock" or "same day".

Though, if what you say is true about the 3200+ deal being $180 last week, one cannot help wonder why nobody but you seemed to know about it. $200 for the 3200+ combo is hot, but $180 is all the more hot. I find it difficult to believe such a deal would escape notice of every hot deal site, but there is nary a mention of it anywhere (except here).

Perhaps you are thinking of this deal on the P4 3.0GHz, which was incorrectly listed as 3.2GHz?

Hot deal. Mwave's combo pricing for same is $218 for CPU & $66 for ECS 755-A2 mb.

Newegg just dropped price of CPU to $192.00 from $215.00, ECS 755-A2 is $64.00.

This deal has been on Outpost for at least 5 days. I have been delibrating to get it since I first saw it but I really want an NForce3 instead of SIS.
There was a 179.99 3200+ combo advertised in the newpaper Fry's ad. I dont believe that it was posted online on Outpost.
I've heard Microcenter has 20% off cpus and motherboards. They have the 3200+ listed at 199. I'm not sure if 20% off means 160 or if the price online is with 20% off. That might be a better possible deal for you guys if you want a differnt mobo.

Alot of us do not have a local Fry's. This is a hell of a deal considering my friend was about to spend $188 on the 3200+ alone, and now gets a motherboard for $12 more instead of buying the Soltek board for $80+. He's not overclocking, and from the Anandtech review it looks like a good, solid motherboard. Also, was it in stock, or was it call in or limited availability like tscenter said (which usually means they're sold out)?

Thanks tscenter!

It better if they're bundling the Retail CPUs with the motherboard

Here's what AT has to say:

While there was no problem fitting a standard heatsink/fan like the AMD Athlon 64 retail HSF, the memory sockets are too close to the CPU to mount a large HSF like the Zalman. The very tall capacitors to the right of the socket could also block some of the larger HSF designs. We suggest that you look carefully at the available space if you plan to mount a very large HSF on the 755-A2.

So the Retail heatsink/fan will work just fine.

As of right now, PCI-E (will change soon), a little bit better performance (depending on the system), and a longer upgrade path with the fastest processors coming out first for 939.

Not to mention some of the 939 chips (Winchester I believe) are built on a .09 Micron process as opposed to a .13 Micron process. Clock for clock the newer ones outperform the older ones. And they also have quite a bit more Overclocking headroom.

Making this even hotter is the fact that you can get a free OS (for a year) from Microsoft if you have a 64 bit CPU.

3200+ combo is now $220, cold. 2800+ is still $170, about $30 cheaper than a 2800+ and (nf3) mobo at newegg.

I'm pretty sure that's a free upgrade from a MS OS (not sure which qualify)... that you purchased recently with a system. IIRC. Still a nice reminder, thanks!

Nevermind, above is true, can get free 'trial' of MS XP 64 here:

Hmmm. Wonder what the final cost is going to be for the 64bit version.

Rumor has it that MS might offer an upgrade from XP Pro to 64-bit for cheap or possibly even free.

whats the big fuzz about xp pro 64? according to AT review, 64-bit is 15% better than 32-bit in media encoding, but in games, 64-bit is as much as -51% (read, minus) compared to 32-bit
