I have a MSI Neo2 Platinum 939 board that had a * FREE * download for XP-64bit. It expires in 360 days, you are beta testing for them, you have to sped time to turn off all the annoying features of XP like the dog search helper, and tweak it like XP. There are 2 program file directories as I recall, on for 64bit and one for 32bit, confusing as to what is going where. It's not installed right now.

Micro$oft and free??

Perhaps you gleaned over the graphs but not the text:
Keep in mind that the software we used is not really written for 64-bit operation. Even so, we found 64-bit encoding to be 15.5% faster than 32-bit. With 64-bit versions of the encoding software we would expect even higher performance. Keep in mind that this is a preview version of XP64, hampered by very early drivers, running an encoder optimized for 32-bit.

re: gaming

It is far too early to reach any conclusions in this area, but there is a lot of driver optimization to be done to make up this kind of delta. With the CPU and memory providing faster 64-bit performance, we have to believe the drivers play a big part in this disappointing gaming performance.
This preview is nearly one year old based on a beta build of XP64 released in December of 2003.

Do you actually believe 64-bit will be slower than 32-bit for gaming? lol!

The Sempron combo was kind of only warm compared with the other two. That's why I didn't mention it.

The 3000+ Cpu was 159.99 after the discount. So I believe the 3200+ is $199.99 AFTER the discount.

Hmmm. Wonder what the final cost is going to be for the 64bit version.

Rumor has it that MS might offer an upgrade from XP Pro to 64-bit for cheap or possibly even free.

I'd feel safe to speculate that the performance drop in games is mostly due immature 64-bit drivers for the motherboard and graphics card. Once Windows 64 goes RTM, you'll probably see much better drivers and game patches that will make it shine (especially in RPG games like Everquest 2 that can never get enough RAM).

Doh, I shouldn't order stuff early in the morning. I thought I was ordering an Athlon 64 combo.

It's there big as day in my own post. I saw Athlon 64 in the mobo description. Oh well...

lol! Well its not a bad price, and you're getting an AMD64 motherboard that will support Athlon 64 up to 3700+, possibly higher if released. But you definitely aren't ready for 64-bit using that Sempron, its only 32-bit.

Thanks tcsenter and ATHD! I received my 3200+ combo today ($199). The 755-A2 they shipped with the A64 is the latest version that supports Sempron for those who want to split a bundle and make a Sempron box too.

Thanks again!

SKU# 4247314
AMD Athlon 64 2800+ Retail Boxed Processor with ECS 755-A2 Motherboard - $169.99 (no rebates, no limit per household)

For comparison (based on Pricewatch, not including tax if applicable):

ECS 755-A2 sells for around $70 ~ $75 shipped.

Boxed A64 2800+ for around $130 ~ $135 shipped.

Boxed A64 3200+ for around $190 ~ $195 shipped.

The 3200+ combo is the hotter deal. Get 'em while they're hot!

So it looks like youve edited out everything...what were the prices etc?

Please leave the prices up and just call it dead wether than just deleting the info...otherwise ask a mod to lock it up. Its just common courtesy is all.

Common courtesy that doesn't seem to be all that common. What does it matter what the price no longer is?

You do your threads the way you like, I do mine the way I like. Get it?

If you don't like it, cry to your mommy (I'll give you a quarter).

Cool, that was a hot deal on this combo. I wish I could have taken the plunge to AMD64, but I already bought the P4 and Sempron combos that Outpost had, plus the Mushkin 512MB PC3200 deal with rebate, which I still haven't received (ET delivery 1/10). I'm tapped for a while.
