Motherboard & CPU possibly fried?

This customer sent his computer to my workplace so the engineers could figure out why it would not work with our product and in the process my boss says he fried the Motherboard & CPU, so they had to buy the customer new parts.

Anyways today I asked him what they were doing with the Motherboard & CPU and he said nothing and that I could take it and give it a shot.

The CPU is a Athlon 64 3200 939socket and the motherboard is a GIGABYTE GA-K8N Ultra-9 Socket 939, as you can see pretty damn good parts if at least one works.

What would be the minimum required to test it out? I?m getting delivered a new MSI motherboard and PCI-X video card soon, so maybe I could use that for testing.

My boss said what happen was he was playing around with one of the PCI slots and then he saw smoke and all sudden the PC would not turn on.

None that i could tell, i only got a brief look at it, i left both parts at work

What the hell was he doing touching the PCI slot when the comp was on?

If it wasn't on, then he needs to put down the lighter while working on a computer.

The only thing I;ve ever seen fried was a SB Live!. I touched it and there was a little tiny spark. The comp recognized the card, but it did not function.

There's a good chance the CPU might be ok, but if he really did see smoke, that mobo is FUBAR.

I think he was testing the PCI slot with some type of device. I don't if it was on or not but he said he saw a smoke puff come up.

The proc may still be good. Test it on a seperate mobo if that one doesn't work.

Yea the gigabyte board is fried, gigabytes boards always fry, especially at in-optertune times when your straped for cash.

How can i tell if the processor is a 3200 Venice or Winchester?

Also my boss told me he was using an oscilloscope to test the clock speed of the PCI slot and he touched something accidently and poof.

He may not have needed to touch anything. With that he may have well just created a bridge. Try to RMA it, you never know they might not care.

I dont have any documentation for it just the motherboard, but i'll check out still..

Update: 7/21/05
I still have not tested the parts, it will have to be this weekend.

You think its possible to test the motherboard and cpu just with a power supply to see if the CPU fan starts to spin? that would be a good sign correct?
I just got my new motherboard delivered so i could just test the CPU alone with the new motherboard also.

I think Motherboard is indeed fried but not sure about CPU.

I think the CPU is dead also, I will have to wait a while until i get my original brand new Athlon 64 PSU to prove it.
