Motherboard heatsink slowing down..

Hello I was browsing through sites when I noticed that my computer started making strange noises and when i looked through the case window i saw that the heatsink on the motherboard started to slow down.. is there any reason why it would and would I be able to fix it myself if i had to? I don't want to RMA the board for something that little..
i have a a8n sli deluxe motherboard

I guess if you will have look in other threads you will find lots of similar stories with a8n. Zalman NB47J is the answer

I think the zalman is a bit too tall. Just remove the fan, and put a cheap $5 yate loon inside the case pointed at the asus heatsink.

i have 2 BFG 6800 ultras and i read somewhere that the nb47j wont fit would http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&product%5Fid=273-240 work to just replace the fan inside it now? or would i have to change heatsink also.. I'm not kind of fan the stock chip fan is so i cant compare the specs

theres no way i can get the 40mm fan today so would there be another solution to fixing it? I have a 80/120mm fans would it be fine if i just had it blowing on the chip or does it have to be facing out? What should I use to monitor the temperature for the chip and what would be a bad temp for it to be at?

I have removed my fan and have just left the heatsink... very easy to remove. I actually have 2 90mm fans inside the case aimed in the direction of the heatsink.

The heatsink temp I've measured at about 42, and sometimes going up to 44. Though the more direct your airflow to it the better, and I haven't messed with mine to make it more direct yet, so I'm guessing my temps might be a little high, but I think 42 is just fine for a mobo chipset.

I believe that the temps from the asus probe are way off. I've used a digital thermometer. You can get one at a craftsman/sears store if you want.

thx do i have to remove the fan from in back of the motherboard? I heard some people saying you have to take out the motherboard to do something to the chipset heatsink or fan.. not sure which it is..
should I have the 120mm blowing into the case or ouf of the case?

No you don't. To remove the fan, take out the 4 small screws which hold the thin metal plate on. Then, move the fan blades around. You will see 3 small screws behind the fan. Take those out and your fan will be free.

All you need is a small phillips head screwdriver.

If you were to remove the heatsink too, then you'd have totake out the motherboard and work out the heatsink from its pins on the back of the motherboard.

***Make sure to ground yourself by touching some metal before you do any of this. Static electricity is your enemy. Touch some metal inside your case and you should be fine.***

I'm a little confused by this, but you should have a fan directing air at the heatsink. The fan that is already on the heatsink was blowing air at the heatsink, not away from it.

right now I have the 120mm fan pointed right at the chip with the case open.. no problems so far. Is there any software I can use that would show the temperature of the chip and the speed of the 120mm fan that is connected to the 3pin next to the chip?

asus probe will tell you the fan speed... and the basic temp... but the problem with that temp reading is that it isn't from the chipset heatsink... it is from the winbond controller which is away from the heat sink.

The asus probe is on the asus cd you got with the motherboard. After you go in to it, you can choose the fan speed monitor or a temperature monitor.

To get an accurate temp reading, you'll have to get a thermometer like I said... but if you have a 120mm fan pointed directly at the heatsink, then it is more than safe to say that the heatsink is getting more air than you could even dream to have gotten from that tiny piece of crap that was on it before. As long as it is getting air, I wouldn't worry. Though if you must check it out, try a digital thermometer.
