Motherboard or Hard Drive issue?

Hey everyone,
I'm having an issue with my Gigabyte Z68x-UD4-B3 motherboard or Samsung HD. I've been having trouble booting into Windows 7 at times. What I mean is, whenever my BIOS splash screen pauses for a minute Windows 7 will not boot. However, whenever the BIOS doesn't hang it boots Windows just fine. I had this HD in another computer before, and it didn't have this problem. I tried reformatting my computer and that didn't fix the problem. I updated my BIOS to the F7 update and it still having issues. I even tried using a different SATA port on the motherboard and that didn't help either. Any suggestions/help would be appreciated!

What he means is in bios did you set the sata port to ahci or ide mode.

Did you try a new cable. Worth a shot if you didn't.

Yes; sorry for being too brief with the answer -- was just wondering if it might make any difference if you toggled that setting in BIOS. It may have defaulted to AHCI since you installed Windows 7.

It's is set as IDE.

Have you tried a new sata cable yet?

I tried changing the cable and so far it seems to have fixed the problem. Would anyone know why that would have fixed it? The other wire looks to be in good enough shape to work. The black plug was only slightly warped or bent.

Probably the same way a perfectly good looking MB won't boot

Joking aside it's a cable and they do sometimes go bad. Most likely if the end looks warped it wasn't making good contact which could get better/worse with temperature changes.

After testing it out for awhile maybe update your first post with what fixed your problem so others with similar problems can get some quick help

Hey, unfortunately that didn't fix my problem. I turned my computer off instead of restarting and it did the same thing. It would show the "loading windows" screen but freeze before it begins loading. I ran the Samsung HD utility and it found an error. So i'm afraid this drive may be dying soon.

Any other ideas what it could be?

Are you overclocking your CPU?

So it just freezes at the splash screen animation? No bsod?

It's possible the drive is going bad. Have a spare to try?
