Motherboard possibly fried

I recently built a computer for my mom. It's an Athlon AM2 system, using this Gigabyte Mobo, 430W Thermaltake power supply and a Raidmax case.

She said that she was just using her computer like normal one day. She got up to go to the bathroom, and when she came back, the computer was off. She tried to turn it on and nothing happened. So I looked at it, nothing seems to be out of place. All of the power cables and the power switch wire from the case is firmly in place.

I'm fairly certain it's not the power supply, because when I turn it off for 8-10 seconds (to drain power from the mobo) and then flip it back on, the LAN port flashes for a second. I also tried hooking her power supply up to my computer and it works fine. Then, I tried the power wire from my computer case onto hers and it doesn't work at all. So, I'm assuming there is something wrong with the power to the motherboard, or maybe more specifically the power switch pins. Power seems to be getting to the motherboard, as seen by the light that flashes, but it just can't power up.

I think I'm gonna call up Gigabyte and try to get a replacement, but I'd like to post here before I have to go through all that. The computer is only about a month old, so I'm a bit surprised it's possibly broken down already.

Might be the PSU, although certain about while its circumstance.. no assumption but follow the basic troubleshooting steps!

Someone on another forum suggested the CPU might be the problem. I looked at it, and there are no burn marks, none of the pins appear to be bent. Nothing seems to be wrong with it on the exterior. I sent an e-mail to Gigabyte, but the response I got was a troubleshooting guide for "System powers up, but no beep and no post," when I clearly stated that the computer doesn't boot up at all.

It sounds like an issue with the motherboard. The motherboard is far more likely to fail then a CPU. Probrably need to get it RMA'd.

Hi paper.

Just 2 weeks ago my system suffered the same problems as yours. I press the power button, the system will turn on, but nothing shows up on my monitor, and none of the usual beeps that indicate a successful startup. On those tries which I managed to boot into windows, around 10 to 20 minutes later it will restart on its own, but would not boot up again, monitor shows nothing.

I managed to isolate the problem to my Gigabyte motherboard (spent 3 DAYS to figure it out aftering swapping out the CPU, GPU, RAM, Hard disk, flashed the latest bios, installed latest chipset drivers...) and brought it down to where I brought it from. The technicians there also got the same problem, and just did a swap for a new board since mine is still in warranty. Came home fix it up, and everything is right again.

I suggest you just bring it down to where you brought it and do a swap, save time. I not 100% sure its your board, but the problems you have is exactly the same as mine.

BTW, what is RMA?

RMA returned materials (or merchandise) authorization.

You get an RMA from a company to return the material (the motherboard) to the manufacture so they can repair it or just send you a replacement.
