Motherboard Problems?

Here is a quick description of the problems Im having.
I have the Abit KV8 Max3 mobo. After installing windows xp, the disk that came with the board and some games, I go to play and the games crash back to the desktop after a few mintues. So I update the BIOS from Abit and the 4 in 1 drivers from VIA's site. Restart, put my settings in the BIOS, alarm starts going off. So I set the settings back to default with the new BIOS. Now Windows gets to the welcome screen and restarts the entire computer or if I get in I get a lot of errors running programs or they restart the computer as well.
SOOO I put the old BIOS back on and am having problems again. Its strange stuff, like unpacking DOOM3 i get corrupt errors, but when I try clicking it again it works!

My buddy says I should send the board back take the restocking hit and get an ASUS.
Anybody have any ideas about what the problem may be or does anyone own this board who has had problems?

I would have sworn that the K8 Via boards aren't supposed to even have the 4-n-1 drivers installed. If they are required, I would probably send it back myself.

so you are saying that boards with those drivers are trouble?

Sounds to me like RAM problems. I'd start there before I wen't returning the motherboard. Memtest is a great test. Also, if you have more than one stick, try one at a time to see if the errors go away.

I think you might have found the problem
I tried changing the settings from DDR400 to DDR333...
Played Command and Conquer Generals (the game that Ive been using to test with) and I was able to play the entire mission with no problems at all. So I changed the settings back to make sure it wasnt a fluke, and sure enough the game froze up on me.
Im going to try switching in one stick right now, and Ill let you know how it goes.
BTW Im using Geil 2x512 PC3200 DC sticks.
