Hi,

I am planning to buy a new computer. I am mighty confused between ASrock Z77 Extreme6 vs ASUS Maximus V Gene. Both boast of the same specs but Asus has ROG tag, a better community while Asrock has the lower price and a little edge specs wise. Please tell your opinion on the same. Also, comment on the customer service of both and suggestions if any. eg. ASRock Z77 OC Formula is an option as well, but not much difference with Extreme6.

ASRock is a solid brand, 3rd largest mobo manufacturer in the world

I plan on picking up the Z77 Extreme3 this weekend

I have the Z77 Extreme 6 and absolutely no issues. Easy to overclock and more stable than my Gigabyte Z77 UD5H. Flimsy PCB though but not a bad trade off.

I like ASUS, but have to hand it to ASRock for putting out quality boards that overclock just as well, if not better than much higher priced boards.

But have you taken a look at the MSI MPower Z77? A very good board for the price

I've owned both brands (but different models). Asus makes a quality board and I have no hesitation recommending them for that reason. Regarding service, their "support" center is abysmal, so do not buy Asus thinking you are getting better service if needed. That said, ASRock probably isn't any better, but don't buy one brand because of an undeserved reputation of service.

I'd say that it depends upon what other hardware you are using in your build. The Asrock Z77 Extreme6 is an ATX borad while the ASUS Maximus V Gene is a Micro ATX board. That matters when selecting your computer case, so if you could specify what case you are looking at or have then it would be helpful in giving you better advice. Also, what CPU Heatsink you are going to use as I do know that the Asrock boards are a bit thinner with a bit more flex than similar boards and a really heavy heatsink the Noctua NH-D14 could cause issues (a small chance but enough to cause some worry). Also, what exactly are you looking to do with this new build? Are you primarily gaming, using it as for sound or graphics design, or are you just looking for an all around good build and want high quality parts? Are you looking to overclock (I would assume so since you are looking at Z77 motherboards but I would want to be certain before making a recommendation)?

Also, when you mention the Asrock Z77 Extreme6 are you talking about the one with Thunderbolt or the one without Thunderbolt? Both are priced lower than the Maximus V Gene, but I'm curious about which one you are specifying.

My only comment is while Asrock is a very popular board for the budget minded the PCB is much more thin than some other boards. This can be a problem when inserting cards into the board. The other issue is with heavy after market CPU coolers. They tend to "warp" the board which isn't good. I also have read numerous posts about how fragile the boards are with connectors breaking off upon installation. Just be aware Asrock will most likely be a bit more fragile to install than the Asus boards. Just my opinion.
