Hi everyone,
thank you for reading my topic and any help will be very appriciated.

This motherboard is going to be used for the second computer that I am building (for my dad). Originally I was gonna get AMD 64 3200+ with a chaintech mobo, but now I have decided to go with a P4 3.0Ghz with HT technology, socket 478 (Prescott core). I am getting AMD for myself with a DFI mobo.

I just need recommendations for a motherboard. I don't wanna spent more then $130 or so.

Thank You all

Me again,
forgot to mention that my dad is not going to be any oc'ing, he just needs something that performs well and almost hassle-free.

Thanks

ASUS P4P800 SE. It is a solid reliable board ... I use it with my 3.0 E Prescott. If you aren't going to overclock then you wouldn't need to install the Asus boost utility.

Did you and your dad have a fight or something?

Brutuscan has good advice for you, but you may save a few bucks getting a cheaper i865PE board.

Another thing you may consider is getting a LGA775 processor with a i865PE motherboard, though you'll probably never upgrade the processor.

he doesn't care whether it's P4 or AMD. i am gonna be doing video editing so if my AMD doesn't do good I'll just switch with him. So I need to get a good P4 motherboard, if things don't go well with AMD.

I am not going to upgrade the processor for a while. But I am curious, is s775 better performer then the s475?

Thanks

I like my Abit IC7-G. Very stable. Plenty of features. Not as good an OCer as the Asus board but you said your dad won't be OCing anyway.

$134 at Newegg.

Thanks guys

Bbond,
is the 875P + ICH5R chipset better then the 85 +ICH5R chipset? What are some of the key differences?
Cause I can see the prices tend to be about $30 different.

Thanks

stable, performs well and hassle free?? go for intel mobos since you'er not going to OC anyway... there the price is a bit lower compared to its Asus (intel based chipset) mobos... and oh by the way, 875 based mobos rock!! just don't compare it to the newer 925s...

yeah I'd have to agree with bim27142..if you're not oc'ing go get an Intel board.

and yes the IC7-G supports HT

If you wanna go cheap get the IS7-E. For the price it can't be beat.

One more think

BBond, does the motherboard you recommended support HT technology?

Thanks

The two chipsets are the Intel I875P (Canterwood) and the I865P (Springdale). The I875P chipset has Intel's PAT (Performance Acceleration Technology), a mysterious technology which some people say was probably Intel binning chipsets that met higher memory timing specs as I875s, which is a good thing but some mobo makers were able to 'turn on' PAT on I865 boards or so they claimed. The Canterwood chipset also adds support for ECC memory.

One difference to look for when you're buying a mobo with either chipset is whether the board uses the ICH5R or ICH5 southbridge. The ICH5 and ICH5R provide a dedicated SATA channel separate from the PCI bus. The "R" denotes RAID0 support. No R - no RAID.

The IC7-G also adds a Silicon Image on board SATA RAID controller. Two extra SATA ports and support for RAID1 which the IC7 doesn't have. So with the IC7-G you get one with everything for around $130 and for about $30 less you can get one with everything minus PAT and ECC memory including RAID0 as long as you buy a board with the ICH5R southbridge.

I like my IC7-G. It's stable and fast. I've had it for almost 18 months now and no problems other than the crappy 40mm northbridge fan that died twice. I switched to a Swiftech MCX159-P heatsink for the northbridge and I run it passive now. Temperatures actually improved and no fan to fail.

Oh yeah, and they both support HT technology as well as 800MHZ FSB.

Well for me yes, worth every penny. I really like the ICH5R native SATA and the Gigabit ethernet. I would say this board still holds it own against the 925 boards. Who knows maybe someday you will get the urge to oc...
