Dammit! We live in a nice, quiet suburb - and today I find that my bicycle is stolen! I've always kept my and my wife's bike sitting in the garage- we live in a townhouse and the garage is an open space - think one giant garage for the building (4 units) separated by garage doors - and the garage door next to ours is vacant left unlocked.

Thank god my wife's bike wans't taken - I made sure to lock THAT one up.

Called the local police as well to report it (probably isn't going to do any good, I know) and left a msg for them to call me back. It's a Trek, and there IS a sticker from the bike shop that I got it from - I got it at a place 3 hours away from here (while in college) so that might be a good ID but I don't know what good it'll do . . ..

EDIT:

I am kinda bummed as that was my first "nice" bike that I had, was my transport during college and I just patched it up so we can use it again . . . how likely - and I'm thinking not very, if at all - are my chances of recovering the darn thing?

I left an MP3 player in my rental car 2 months ago. Long story short, one of the times I called the place, the guy told me their cleaning people get bonuses for returning items left behind.

Right... $3 bonus or $100 mp3 player, what to do what to do.

Just wow. I thought bike thefts were some sort of internet legend or something. You know, only happens to professional boxers that wear pink windbreakers.

I'm starting to feel less sorry for you.

The 2 other times didn't clue you in to lock it up or do something about it?

call your renter's insurance company. It should be covered, and you should be good to go and buy a replacement.

As one of managers used to day "reading is fundamental" - this time it was sitting in our garage: do you know anyone who locks up their bike if it's in their garage?

The other two was when I was overseas - as in, I was not in the US: and yes, I did lock it up then as well.

Is is ironic that I'm taking pleasure in your misfortune? :awe:

Seriously though, it's doubtful that you'll get your bike back. Might as well write it off as gone...

Ironically I was offered a Trek bike for $30 from some guy who was offering it from the back of a van. Not wanting to pass up on this once in a lifetime opportunity, I reached for my wallet and then realized I only had $10 in cash.

That sucks ass dude .

I had my bike stolen last summer, and unbelievably, got it recovered just over a month later. I had to get replacement rims and tires (they were switched out for shitty ones) but at least the frame was intact.

Best advice is to register it on several of the lost bike sites, (I hope you have the serial number somewhere - you NEED this), and put an ad in the lost & found section on craigslist.

I was lucky that someone recovered my bike, saw my ad, and returned it to the Vancouver Police Department, who had my information on file after I reported it stolen. They also emailed me to let me know they had recovered it and given it to the police.

It's a long-shot, but hope for the best.

"THAT'S MY BIKE, PUNK!"

LOL, oh god I love that movie.

"Hey man. Pop's is trippin, he want me to ask for my bike back."

"WHAT BIKE?"

Anywhoo, same thing happened to me, Bike, golf clubs.. pretty much anything of value not nailed down stolen out of my garage. Gave the the cops the serial number and all that jazz, didn't hear anything - had to end up putting in a claim to my homeowner's insurance since my clubs and bike justified paying the deductable but that's probably not the best route for you.

Here's a :beer to hoping you recover it.

Everybody I know who lives in a place with common-use garages lock their bikes up. But in any case, your insurance should cover your loss.

I think you have to start being more specific as you're getting confusing.

The way you worded your post, it is like the garage could not be locked. You didn't state it in a way YOU left it unlocked.

Also being overseas is vague. Was the bike in the same garage? This is what I thought you were implying. You never suggested it was in a different spot the other times.

Explaining is fundamental.

Allright, allright, point taken, even though it's nice that you'd jump to conclusions if the message was ambiguous:
  • The garage has 4 separate doors w/ a common space inside:
  • We always lock our doors, but the door next to us is currently vacant and it is unlocked
  • The other two times when it was stolen were when I was overseas teaching and used a bicycle as a means of transport over there: my bike (the current one that was stolen) was sitting pretty in my parent's garage at the time.

I didn't feel it was ambiguous until your reply to my post about "the other 2 times". It seemed straight forward until then.

This has all the answers we need!

Had a party one night at my house. We had the garage open so we could go out and smoke. Could not have been more then 15 min between people smoking. I had a mini bulllet bike, air compressor and my leaf blower fuckn stolen out of there. I could not believe it. I mean there were cars parked all over the place. I can't believe anyone would take the chance. I wish to god I would have walked out there while they were in the process of stealing my shit.
