Sounds similar to my current employer. You won't see an IT guy around here for months (we actually got desperate and hijacked one of the senior techs to start reghosting the machines due to viruses we notified them about a week ago), but all of a sudden files will be randomly deleted (including occasionally the only copy of a driver we need, or a zip of not-often-used solutions for older machines), systems will be moved around, etc... Just general jerks about the entire thing.

Yes, tech support reps are about a dime a dozen, probably cheaper. The senior techs occasionally get respect, but rarely. And the L2s/Product Specialists are crapped on because we're supposed to set an example and so on. Bleh.

And yet I look into the server room and see personal equipment laying all over there. Heh. (But then again, they run NT on the servers, so that could explain the need for speakers.)

Viper, just get the bad press about Qwest out there and changes will happen. See how many people have said that they will no-longer consider working there because of hearing about this incident. If the whole area gets to read an editorial in the news paper on it from an anonymous source there should be some hell rasied in management.

Put me on the list of people no longer considering them for employment.

That is just plain wrong... no doubts about it. There are ALOT of things that are in corporate policies that never are enforced. Egads.. what has this company gotten up it's craw lately? Middle management not have enough to do around the holidays??

My company has a standing policy that the only thing to be plugged into the building wide UPS is the computer (no, not even the monitor). If someone brings in a personal item (space heater, fan, whatever) and plugs it into the orange outlet at their cube, and the item is noticed, it will be confiscated on the spot.

Our UPS recently was at 100% capacity, so we did a quick sweep of the office (about 150 people) looking for things. Didn't find anything, I wouldn't have liked taking away someone's $20 space heater. Unfortunately, it's something we gotta do. Those space heaters take up about 12 computers worth of power, and with our struggling UPS, we can't risk a power outtage taking down the corporate network.

It's understandable they wouldn't want powered items at cubes, but headphones and battery powered speakers. That's terrible. I'd be bitching up and down the chain of command.

we had specially marked outlets as well. the orange outlet. we were allowed to bring anything into our cube and use whatever we wanted as long as it did not disrupt other people. we could've plugged into any outlet but the orange ones, which ran the monitors, computers, fax machines and printers. the other outlets would've been dead. no way would your UPS been at 100% max load. when it hits around 75%-80% alarms woulda ran off. and if you are in relatively big building they have generators that are able to keep a building functioning 2-3 hours.

The thing is... it seems as though the IT punks took things that they wanted, or things that were worth something (if they wanted to sell). Viper's speakers were obviously battery powered, so that wouldn't harm the UPS. And if they were taking stuff because they feared people were being distracted from work, then they should have grabbed all the other stuff Viper listed.

Them IT bitches are taking advantage of the corporation's policy for their own benefit. Punkasses.

pg19...

Why do I work here? Because it pays my bills. Other than that it's just a job.

chrisjaggers...

Yeah, I'm in Oregon. I work in Beaverton, off of Murray Blvd.

Rigoletto...

If you have something to say, say it. Believe me, my "childish" self can handle it just fine. If anybody here takes themselves too seriously, it's undoubtedly you & that stick you have up your ass.
