Apparently last night IT came through & confiscated any "unauthorized" equipment. They went through the whole damned building, went through drawers, & confiscated anything without an authorizatin tag. This included:

- Speakers
- Headsets
- Burnt CDs
- Any electronic equipment

I JUST noticed that my $30 Sony speakers were gone. They're a little tiny pair that ran off battery power, since the old policy was that speakers that didn't require external power were OK. They have NO way of determining when items were brought in. People that have been here a year, whose managers were completely aware of what they had, who were in no way trying to hide their equipment, & now it's all in a giant wire cart somewhere. What the FVCK are they going to do, auction them off on Egay & buy themselves a new car? Cocksuckers.

Godammit, those were a gift to me.

woah, that majorly sucks. even if its the companies policy to not allow that type of stuff, that still wouldn't give them a right to steal your stuff, or even resell it for that matter. i'd take action, start by removing anything in the building with an authorizatin tag. im sure they'd give in, and give everyones stuff back, if they realised there stuff was going missing and not coming back.

Thing that really sucks, even if I DO get them back, they're probably broken. They are quite fragile, as they're designed for use with portable CD players & such. If they were really that big of a problem, I would have taken them home, or done whatever was necessary to get "approval" to have them in the building.

[EDIT]IT is the company tech group, they handle all the computers, printers, & networks in the building. Apparently they're also kleptomaniacs.[/EDIT]

That's FVCKED UP! What the hell kind of company do you work for? Those b1tches are probably pawning your sh1t somewhere. Any chance you can find out where they stored your stuff? Go ninja and grab all of it back. (of course that might come at a risk to your job) Do they even have the right to keep that stuff? Since it's your property, they should have to give it back to you right? Let you go with a warning or something.

Cite the 5th amendment, which among other things, prevents the seizure of property without due process of law.

If it bothers you that much tell them that what they did was illegal and unconstitutional.

Actually, I'm not at all sure that what they did WAS illegal. Believe me, if I WAS sure, I'd be raising a lot more hell than I am right now. Yes, technically the current IT policy is no personal hardware in the building without an authorization slip. But there are countless pairs of speakers that were brought in before that policy was enacted, when all they had to be was passive or battery powered to meet the requirements.

As far as the 5th Amendment goes...

Amendment V
No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime,
unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising
in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time
of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense
to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any
criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life,
liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be
taken for public use, without just compensation.

I think they're safe on that one.

Needless to say it's going to be interesting here on Monday. Can we say 1200 pissed off techs?

I'm looking forward to it.

No this is not illegal or unusual. What's the matter Viper didn't these republican nazis explain the rules to you about unauthorized equipment on corporate property!

OK, how's this as a rough draft of a letter? This will be going to my manager as well as the head of IT:

I lost a $30 pair of battery powered Sony speakers (designed for use with portable equipment) in the recent IT sweep (Dec 1st). If they were really that big of a problem, I would have gladly taken them home, but there was no warning whatsoever. Under the old policy of no devices which require external power, there was no reason they should have been taken. I was not trying to hide them.

I would appreciate their return, they were a gift to me.

Also, it's interesting to note that the IT sweep was performed VERY unthoroughly. Some people got hit, others still have their speakers, headphones, etc. on their desks.

If you're going to do it, at least do it right.

This look good? Or should I add "Incompetent kleptos" at the end like I'm SO desperately tempted to...

Hey, there's a good idea. Anybody know what a few dozen Aspect telesets would be worth on the black market?

Unfortunately, my 17" monitor & my Dell P3 are marked.

Damn those headsets are expensive! Like $70 a pop for some of the nicer models with the mute and external volume control. Hmmmmmmm

Hehe, if you really want to piss them off and nickel and dime them to death, start swiping toner cartridges

At $150 a pop for some of them, you nab 4 or 5 of them and just stash 'em away, they'll start to notice.

I would word it differently.

"Personal property of mine (a pair of battery-powered Sony speakers) was taken from my work area on Dec. 1, apparently by the IT group. The persons involved probably didn't know that the speakers were my personal property. If having these speakers in my work area was a violation of a company policy, I wasn't aware of it.

"I'd like to pick up my speakers tomorrow, so please let me know whom to contact to arrange for their return."

It parallels your version but stops after the second paragraph - leave out the part about what happened to other people because it's irrelevant. And instead of asking for them back, this version assumes you're getting them back, and gives IT a chance to save face (they didn't know they were your property).

cablegod...

Why do you think they did it at night? The overnight people in my area managed to get ~5 minutes of warning, & snatched up everything they could find & stored it in a cabinet that IT doesn't have access to. Unfortunately they didn't manage to grab mine.

Had I been here they wouldn't have gotten them. I would have told them to go fvck themselves, & gone & put them in my car.

Actually when one puts one's personal belongings onto someone elses property (house, home, business, land, etc), without the permision of the property owner/leasee/resident, they can quite rightfully claim title to it, or charge you a fee for its removal (& make the fee higher than what the personal property is worth).

I remember hearing on the news about a couple who bought a rural property & then built a house on it. Well anyway sometime many years previously, one of the previous owners had leased some land from a niehbour & that was fenced in with the block that was purchased. Well the couple had actually built their house on this land belong to the neihbour & when the neihbour sold his property, the new neibhour had the property surveyed & claimed the house was his, as it was on his land. Well it went to court & the neihbour won. The judge said something to the effect that it was the couple's fault for not surveying the property 1st.

Well like anything legal, their are so many bloody precedents & conflicting laws that these things useally comes down to who can afford the best lawyer or whether the judge takes a dislike to you or something.

Anyway, I'm sure if Viper kicked up a stink he'd get his speakers back. Anyway if you don't get them back & are unwilling to axcept the rules 'n conditions of your employer, you can always chose to quit & work elseware. No one forced you to have to work there, if you don't like there rules & conditions you can leave.

You "republican nazis" (to coin IronMike's term) keep complaining about workers being too fusy & unions being too powerful & if employees don't like their conditions they can always leave & get another job somewhere else.

However if I was you I would wait till my employer had forgotten about my greivance, then I would comence ripping off whatever I could that belongs to my employer (revenge is a dish best served cold). A bit of stock shrinkage never goes amiss. Mind you there's only so much office stationary one can pinch, before every starts thinking you've got Jewish/Scottish ancestry. You ought to get a job in a liquor store, now there's a business where a greivance with the boss could end up being profitable - it'd almost be worth starting a fight with the boss so one could justify pinching a case of bourbon every week.

Yeah Viper in your letter don't ask for your stuff back nicely and then DUMP on I.T.! I don't think that will help you in the end (aside from making you feel better) hehe.

If that don't work its time to start stuffing toilet paper rolls down IT's toilets, taking a dump, maybe throwing some software CDs in the mix, and then flushing and watching the ensuing chaos!!!!

Write an anonymous letter saying you are going to keep flushing the toilets until the property is returned!

Legally they probably had the right to confiscate that stuff, but common courtesy from any employer should be expected. Let us know Monday when all those pissed techs start realizing their sh*t has been taken.
