My grandma has that disease (and it is a disease), only worse:
Entryway (after I cleared a path wide enough for a walker)
Kitchen

I felt so sorry for my Grandad that I spent ~60 hrs this summer clearing out the living room which had been walled off with boxes since 2000. You wouldn't believe the random stuff I pulled out of there, including an envelope with $1700 in cash (all old style bills):
It's getting there...

Edit: Luckily I avoided those tendencies. Or did I?

Oh the days of IRQ, DMA, and I/O port management, done by commandline. May those days never return.
I understand the sentiment, but IRQ, DMA and I/O management was done through the BIOS, not a command prompt.

Back in the days of DOS you would have to configure and know these settings by heart. I remember spending hours just trying to get all of the drivers loaded into upper memory to free up as much of that 640k as possible in the most efficient way. Games back in the days of DOS required you to know the DMA and IRQ of your video and sound cards as well.
I sure as heck had to do all kinds of settings in my config.sys file.

And yes, that damn 640kb was a pain in the ass. Dune II used up a lot of that, and would often piss on the carpet if it didn't get its memory.

Ahhh... Dune II! I used to love that game like crazy! It's the game that got me hooked on RTS's.

I've had that conversation with my wife about my grandparents house.

my stepdads father was like that as well. when he passed away my parents cleared his house and found microwave dishes, but he didnt have a microwave. he had bags of hammers in boxes, and every size shoe lining the hallway. he also had 39 rifles stashed away, one being an uzi. he was an eccentric guy, but in all his estate sold for over 2 mil. he collected stuff like in the photos, but it was worth a fortune lol.

And before that they were done by jumpers on the boards.

I've never read anywhere that it's a disease. Most doctors relate it to OCD but are still studying it.

Exactly. It's a manifestation of OCD, which is a disease.

I've experienced it first-hand. It's almost like my grandma can't see the piles of stuff everywhere.

lol i remember seeing that a few years ago, was still amusing reading through all that.

I would of disconnected her internet long time ago, or make the computer "magically stop working".

Then start selling the stuff on ebay to help pay tuition LOL

And now we slap 8 gigs of ram in a computer like we just don't care.

And install vista, so we're STILL stuck with 640K left to play games with. Ok maybe not that bad.

I know a hoarder (not me, really). This person crams his basement, attic and backyard with garbage (literally from people's lawns/curbs) from floor to ceiling. The only thing stopping him from cramming the first and second floors is the family that has to live with him. You'll find old safes, refridgerators, motors, washing machine parts and panels, random cabinets, chairs, pieces of lumber, etc. When asked, this person says he does it "cause it can be used" in the future; I guess when the world ends, the neighbourhood would come to him for stuff so he can profit. In reality, the stuff us never used, and eventually thrown away. He has become some kind of intermediary between the garbage collector and the household. This person also has a lottery ticket gambling problem, so it's probably mental...

The rest of my apartment is clean - kitchen is nice and tidy, living room is normal, same goes for the bathroom and bedroom, but my computer room is full of old computer parts, boxes, and a ton of books (I have a book shelf but it's completely full). It's weird because I throw out old clothes, throw out old kitchen implements, throw out old magazines.
I think I have enough parts to resurrect a decent 386 PC, complete with a Creative Soundblaster 16 - one of the huge ISA cards that had the IDE controller built-in, for CD-ROM support.

I do and I have built and old 486 class computer out of spare parts. I also had one of those AMD 5x86 processors that I put in and overclocked to 150MHz. I installed a bunch of DOS games on it and then I got bored of it. It's not sitting in my closet. I also have enough parts to build a 386 too. And I've got a few extra 486 processors lying around. An SX 25 and a DX 66 I think.

Like I said in a thread like this yesterday:

I take it you've never watched Kim and Aggie.

They don't seem to be running out of people to be the subject of a show that are in the same position as what you see in the pics. It is amazing how some people seem to have had some giving up moment in their life and then their houses keep them imprisoned in their own despair. I also find it amazing that some of these people are able to keep others from knowing.
