Do we know what the off-contract price will be?

Posters on various sites are saying: Off contract Moto X price on AT&T: $575 for 16GB, $630 for 32 GB

I imagine the Google Play Edition would be around that, based on the One / S4 GPE pricing.

Failure to decouple from carriers is disgusting. Who would pay $199 for a carrier phone? The GS4 is far more lucrative.... Like I said. Unnecessary hype.

Edit: Although I do congratulate Moto for finally doing a 5-carrier launch. I think it was stupid to continue doing Verizon exclusives all the time. Maybe exclusives were cool in the iPhone 2G days, but not so much anymore.

Greed will kill an otherwise nice phone. Microsoft did the same with Surface RT. You just can't ask these kind of prices if you are nobody compared to the giants in the business.

So...

This looks like one of the worst ideas this year.

Why even bother going through that Droid Ultra release stuff when you were going to launch pretty much the exact same phone a couple weeks later but called something different?

So this is a bit interesting though. Let's see how people like Holo JB now that its available for mainstream users.

I realize that on paper Samsung is still every bit the heavyweight champion and I still see the GS4 as the more attractive phone, but from a UI perspective, have people had enough of TouchWiz and the ugly green theme? What about HTC's Sense? Moto X might not be a clear hardware winner, but if its software is good enough to bring people on board, I think skinless or nearly skinless is a huge advantage.

This whole Droid exclusive on Verizon better end after this. I'd like Moto to adopt the strategy that all manufacturers have been using in the rest of the world--that is releasing 1 freaking model across the globe. If it means additional SKUs due to banding, fine, but keep it 1 product.

I think the phone as a whole, is a poorly executed spec wise, but otherwise brilliant concept.

Design looks amazing, but the price is absurd for the spec. I doubt the average user would warm to the stock Android experience, it's just a bit barren in my opinion, which is where TouchWizz and Sense win, or for my One X, MIUI.

I don't think people are going to care. I don't see any reason to pick this over a HTC1 or SGS4.

It should be free on contract. That would be the best way to increase Motorola's market share and get Holo out there.

Hmm.. I am a bit surprised by many negative reactions. Reading AT's preview, I am rather intrigued by this thing. And whatever the introductory price may be it will drop in short order if we look at the history. Before I make a value judgment I will wait for the off-contract price, esp. Play store price.

But here's what I've said before -- who cares about the specs? As long as someone picks it up and it feels nice, doesn't that matter the most? I think this is what phones have been in the past and its what Apple is selling. However, Samsung's already created such a marketing monster to talk about 1080p, 5", quad core, octacore, etc.

I guess to me the biggest difference is 1080p versus 720p. That's instantly noticeable to consumers. However if your phone is fast enough, dual or quad core isn't going to be easily noticed.

As Anand likes to say, there is never (or at least rarely) a bad product, only bad prices. I think the Moto X sounds like a neat device, but it's a joke at those prices. The preview seems to view it positively with the idea that the price will drop quickly, but until it does I can't think of anything positive to say about it. The hardware is ancient and although it may be sufficient for today's needs, how will it hold up 2 years from now? $99/$399 is about as much as I could stomach for this device, and really free/$299 is where it would have made a splash.

The pricing is a friggin joke. I'd have happily overlooked the worse specs when compared to the One or S4, but given that it is the same price? Ridiculous.

Well, the screen is SAMOLED. (Super AMOLED, i.e., AMOLED with RGB stripes) I suppose that is a big part in the cost equation.

But I am confused. Isn't Snapdragon 600 (or Krait 300) = 8064T? AT's preview says it's got a dual-core S600 yet the spec sheet says MSM8960.

Edit: Screenshot of CPU-Z.

Anybody that thought this phone was going to unlocked for 350 is a moron. It wasn't going to happen. Blame yourselves for being dumb, not Motorola.

Please tell us what this phone has that justifies a *three times higher* price than the new Nexus 7. Please go ahead.

Wow the price pretty much killed this for me. I paid nearly the same price for a Galaxy Note II when it was released. I'm probably getting the Note III anyway but I could've been swayed by this if the price was right.

Guess not.

A $100-$150 price premium to the HTC one and S4 on contract, same price as Jesus Phone 5? Wow.

If I was Moto, I'd think about firing whomever it was doing competitive analysis. Clean that product pipeline, start thinking ultra-desirable products for the flagship & premium pricepoint and non-stupid pricing when shooting mainstream.
