Didn't see a thread on this so I might as well create it, as this phone is just a weeks away from being released. This phone is getting a lot of attention on other sites, and it certainly warrants the hype.

In short, we are talking about a $400 phone with premium specs and unique attributes:

  • 5.7” quadHD screen
  • Screen-body ratio: 76% (vs 75.9% for Note5, 74% for Note4, iPhone6+ 68%)
  • Snapdragon 808
  • 3000 mAH battery, with claimed super-quick charging.
  • 21MP f/2.0 camera, ranking 3rd among all phones by DxOMark
  • 5MP front camera with flash
  • Dual front-facing speakers
  • 16/32/64GB internal (rumored $449 for the 64GB option)
  • microSD slot! (up to 128 GB)
  • Works with all US carriers, unlocked, with no strings attached
  • Near stock Android with no bloat (moto-specific features are actually useful)
  • Customizable back-plate material
  • Water resistant (IP52 certified)
  • Likely to be root-able (very important for me).

I've been waiting a long time to replace my aging Galaxy S3, and this is probably it. I can't wait to have Moto features like Moto Display (for notifications) and always-on voice recognition (when I'm driving). The only thing holding me back from a day1-purchase is root. I only buy phones after I know they've been rooted. So as soon as that shoe drops, this baby is mine.

Didn't realize it had such a good screen to body ratio. I don't remember, does it have front facing speakers?

The camera is the make it or break it for me. Note 5 has a fantastic camera.

Looking at screenshots, it seems like Moto is still doing the uneven bezel sizes (top is bigger than bottom), that doesn't look so good when you have the phone in landscape. Also I was never a fan of the shape, with it being thicker up top. I like my phones to be as symmetric as possible.

Edit: Actually now that I look at it again, I can't tell if the bezels are symmetric or not.

No OIS and the battery size are of concern to me. Until the new Nexus phone(s) come out, I won't get too worked up over this phone.

Lost me at 5.7"
This is what's killing me also. If you asked me for an ideal phone size in 2013, I probably would've said 4.5"-4.7". If you ask me now, I would say it's 5.0"-5.2", with minimal bezels. I absolutely hate big phones, and see no purpose for them. I love consuming media, but I don't consume it on my phone personally. I have tablets and other devices for that.

I'm not saying don't make big phones, but give the options to consumers for smaller phones. I want something w/ the power of Moto X in a Moto G size. They could have a new SKU: the Moto X+ which would have the same internals as the Moto X, but just a bigger display. If you have options, everyone wins.

/rant.

I did receive my Moto G 2015 (aka 3rd. gen) yesterday, and it's a nice phone. I got the 2GB RAM/16 GB version, and for the price, it's great. The power user in me wishes it was slightly faster, or had a better display/camera, but I can't complain considering what it's worth.

Is the only (newest gen) Moto to have stereo front facing speakers, they really did a great job with the screen to body ratio considering that.
The bottom bezel might be a mm smaller. The black version should hide this better, if your OCD doesn't let you sleep.

Not to nitpick, but the Note 5 screen to body ratio is actually 76.6%, but they're both obviously excellent. One gives you biometrics on front, the other stereo speakers.

X Style: 153.9 x 76.2 x 11.1 mm (curved back throws off thickness obviously)
Note 5: 153.2 x 76.1 x 7.6 mm

I'm getting one when it comes out.
If the Note 5 was only $100 more, I'd get that instead but $300+ is a big difference.

I'm waiting to see if the student discount will work for this phone. $349.99 with the discount is a steal for what your getting.

The note 5 is twice that price and I'm done with samsung and carrier branded phones. They take their sweet time with updates and if something is wrong your stuck with it til they fix it, if they even fix it.

OIS is nice but it won't steer me away from the moto x not having it, the camera is supposedly really good and it has micro SD support.

I'd wait on the nexus devices but I'm pretty sure I'll be let down with high prices and no micro sd support

I'm not worried about battery life at all, the SD 808 on basically stock android should be fine.

I'm glad to see the quick charge is so fast, if you do need to plug your phone in it shouldn't take to long to get some juice back into it.

I'll be at best buy release day for sure so I can mess with it and make sure it isn't too big. Then I'll do the moto maker online

I'd guess it's probably the QHD screen that is a little bit more of a concern for battery life. Hasn't done particularly great for the LG G3/G4. I have a G4, wish it was a bit more efficient. Samsung's SAMOLED QHD screens seem to be a bit more efficient there.

No OIS is indeed unfortunate, but not a deal breaker. They gotta cut corners somewhere to get to that price point.

Nexus phones are a non-starter due to no SD slot.

I ordered The Moto X Pure with Black front, dark grey metal accent, and brown leather back, with 64GB yesterday.

I was going to wait until the new Nexus phones are released later this month but my old phone broke and I needed something right away.

If the new Nexuses turn out to be way more awesome, and if I'm non-lazy enough, I would sell the Moto X Pure and get one of the new Nexus phones. Another plus of the Nexuses would be the ability to get on Google Fi.

The only thing I don't like about the Pure is the lack of fingerprint reader, and possibly the battery life. But I don't think the batt. life is worse than an average phone. If it's the same as my old S4, I would be fine with that, especially given the turbo charging that lets you go from 0 to 100 in 1h15m.

Actually, since the Note 5 has capacitive buttons its even higher. Every phone with on screen buttons loses screen real estate due to on screen buttons unless all you do is play games and watch videos where they hide.

Did anyone end up getting this phone? I got my black front black silicone back cover 16gb on Saturday.

So far I'm loving the phone, no lag at all. Signal is very good, battery life is good enough for me. The screen is bright and crisp, colors are very good and not oversaturated. The turbo charger is a beast. The camera is very good, much improved over my galaxy S5. Size is perfectly fine, I can one hand text on it no problem at all.

Overall I'm very happy with this phone and glad that I bought it

What he said.

The phone really doesn't feel huge in the hand. I had a S5 before and it doesn't seem that much bigger. I can one hand text on it easily still.

I think a lot of people are going to miss out on a really good phone because they are to damn stubborn to give it a shot.

Hell go buy one from best buy, you've got 14 days to return it.

Gotta disagree there - a reasonable 5" phone like the S5/S6 are much more compact in hand than the Style/Note sized phones, especially one handed. As a phablet user, I think it's manageable and worth the bigger screen, but to say it doesn't seem much bigger is a pretty gross exaggeration.

How's the focus and snapping speed, especially in low light? I've found that to be the usability difference between good and great cameras these days. I'm glad to leave the days behind of 1/2 sec to 1 second focusing and lag when taking photos in low light or constantly getting blurred photos of moving subjects in stock Auto.

this is a pic i took (obviously not full quality since its instagram) , with the moto x 2015.

https://instagram.com/p/7lQvoByCRJ/

i'd probably say 1/2 the shots came out decent, and the other half blurred. then again its pretty hard to take pictures in the dark with flashing LEDs everywhere.

my last 3 phones were a 2015 moto e, a 2013 nexus 5 and a 2013 moto x (and i've got a s6 edge and a g flex 2 for work).

i'd say its a little slower at focusing than the s6 edge, but the actual images come out just about as good. for $400 cant really complain.

i've got pretty big hands, and this and the gflex 2 in hand are about the same wide, so whatever. its probably as big i'd wanna go. coworker has a nexus 6 and for my hands thats just at the "i could use this , but almost always 2 hands" point for me.

5.7" for this isn't THAT bad. its the same width as a G4 or gflex2. plus the edges are thin so its not too bad to hold (the gflex is less easy to hold since its so plasticky). battery life is better than the gflex in my personal experience. i'd put it on par with the s6 edge. the gflex 2 has really bad idle, this is not bad at that. its no 2015 moto e, but then again its a ton faster and it least its not nexus 5 awful battery wise. quickcharge 2 charging is really fast. a lot faster than the gflex2 or s6 on a qc 2.0 charger (not sure if those even support it fully)

The phone is really nice, I've had mine since Saturday. Today I got 5hrs and 46 minutes screen on time and the phone was off the charger almost 18 hours.

If your on the fence about getting the moto x just get it from best buy, you have 14 days to return it if you don't like it
