Mobil 1 does not have a starting TBN of 5.5-6 like Eli said. The most recent test of Mobil 1 0W-40 showed a starting TBN of 11.5.

I wasn't aware of the updated TBN results for Mobil 1. I am sure the newer Mobil 1 EP has a higher TBN than Mobil 1. But there are no product data sheets on Mobil's site for the EP oils, and there are no figures for the TBN on the 0w40, 0w30, no data sheet for the 5w20...

Truck and SUV 5w40 which is essentially Delvac 1 has a published TBN of 12 on mobil's product data sheet.

VOA is the only way to go as far as figuring out an oil. Published results can vary wildy from VOA readings.

In anycase, Esso XD-3 is a pretty good oil for the money. I think wallyworld/walmart in canada carries Esso, though i dont think all of them do.

No, the M1 EP does NOT have a higher TBN than Mobil 1. The standard Mobil 1 Supersyn 0W-40 had a TBN of 11.5. Someone on BITOG had it tested by Blackstone last week. Please check the forum for more VOA results.

apples to oranges? there is no EP 0w40 as far as I know.

'SL' 0w40 had TBN of 12 whilst the 'SM' 0w40 tested at 11.5.

Mobil EP 5w30 tested at 11 TBN. I cannot find on BITOG what 'SM' 5w30 tested at for TBN.

I never said that there was a M1 EP 0W/40. All that I said was that M1 EP oils in general do not have a higher TBN over their standard M1 counterparts. Also, we've found on BITOG that most SM oil look "weaker" than the previous SL version.

Chevron 5W/30 @4K intervals. Add some LC/FP to that as well, but its not necessary in order to achieve 4K drains.

Mobil 1 5W/30 would also be a good choice for a synthetic oil, but run two cycles of Auto-RX first to clean up the engine.

I know that...i just thought you were implying it...i knew what you meant though.

And FYI, i too am a member of BITOG been so for a while.

The Mobil EP oil bottles I have noticed at walmart aren't API starburst rated for energy conserving; more [specific] additives mean no SM rating, so it's still SL and not energy conserving. But, do you personally feel that the 'SL' Mobil EP is a better oil than the 'SM' Mobil 1? I like others on the board think they could ahve done a little better on teh EP oil.

You had me scared for a moment- a BITOG member telling people that M1 has a starting TBN of 5.5-6!!!

But the M1 EP is probably better than the standard M1, regardless of the API spec. But you are comparing apples and oranges here. The M1 EP is designed to be a more robust oil than the standard M1; yes, I do believe that ExxonMobil could have done a better job here, but what do you expect for around $5/quart? I'm not saying that SL oils in general are going to perform better than SM oils because I have seen enough UOAs of SM oils to jump to a conclusion. Even though the SM oils do look weaker, I'm really hoping that the base oil is better, hopefully giving better results.
