Personally I do 2-3K miles on Mobil 1 Synthetic. It's for a high performance car, though. On regular vehicles you should be safe with 5K on regular oil. Your driving habits do come into play on that, though. I don't know how accurate the "oil life monitor" systems work on cars, so I usually just go by miles and end up changing it before it reaches 0% anyway.

wtf, 2-3k miles... it may be a high performance car, but how the hell do you drive it?

Check your owner's manual for the best change intervals.

Your oil is actually in its best condition at about mid cycle, if you change it before that you're actually doing more harm than good.

I have read a number of articles saying that synthetics (especially Mobile 1) do not hit optimum lubrication until 7-8,000 miles. So changing it every 2-3 is just stupid. I change filter every 5k and filter & oil every 10k.

Ok so i have a 2 block commute to and from work. NO I cannot walk or bike due to the stupid streets. Trust me, others who live in the development say the same thng.
Having said this, i average about 800 miles a month (if i dont take trip durng the weekends). It would take me roughly 6 monhs to hit 5k miles on my car (i use mobil 1).
Am I in trouble if i wait 6 months?

That's a lot of wear on the car, because it never fully lubricates

Do you just put the oil back in when it leaks out during the filter change?

What do you suggest? Change every 3 months?
