I've been thinking about getting a bike for the past couple weeks. I told my mom and she didn't really say much about it like she was against it or for it..

before I was an adult:
I wanted a bike before I wanted a car but my parents wouldn't allow me to, and I had to listen because I wasn't an adult. I ended up getting a car.. which I love but it's kinda my track car now.

well I've been checking out bikes and planned on getting one soon..

Today, my mom says that she doesn't want me getting a bike, and she doesn't want me to kill myself. She also said if I was to get a bike, I had to move out.

now I'm

need to decide what to do.. listen to my mom, or say fuck that and get a bike

What do you guys think?

as a note: my dad passed away from lung cancer this year, our family has been through a lot because of it. I understand why she is worried about me riding and not needing the extra stress. I just think I should do it for myself because I've always wanted too.

I guess if you want to move out of the house, pay your own rent and be an stubborn independent adult, go for the bike! Your Mom has gone through a lot lately, and I see her point clearly.

Please buy a Busa or a ZX14R. I'm pretty sure I've made at least two kids locally with their 1400's promptly return them when I obliterate them on a ZX10 and they realize they will never use their bloated overweight ugly curved monstrosities for their intended purpose (being a goddamn drag strip and not 60MPH on the interstate).

I absolutely love the fact that uneducated people buy 1400 Supersports just to get stomped by my liter bike because they think they're faster.

Respect your parents (living or dead) and the values they hold. Her house, her rules.

You are not an adult until you are paying your own way and supporting yourself. When you are doing that, THEN you can do whatever you want. Use the money you would spend on a bike, getting out on your own.

Life is short and we all die. Get a bike if you want, take a course before that though and get some experience. Ride safe, ride with gear, ride in a relaxed manner and you will be ok. My dad didn't get a bike for 15 years in Canada because he was afraid of riding with all the crazy people out there on the road. I finally convinced him and he is loving it.

I am pretty sure you're mom won't kick you out of the house. Also you should take her to a few bike places and get her involved. I was planning to buy a bike for about 8 months and during that time I did a shit ton of research. I talked with my mom a lot about the purchuse and what exactly I want to be doing. My mom even came with me to Harley to check out bikes many times, which is cool. When I finally did get the bike she was just as excited as me about it. The first day when I had it in my garage at home we just pulled out a few chairs, some beers, and chilled and looked at it.

On a side note I did have a pretty bad bicycle accident a few years back where I was hit by a car running a red. That really put my life on a downward spiral for a long time, along with my parents who had to deal with the stress of almost losing a son. Believe me when I say that myself, and my parents were very sensitive to the subject. All is well now, they still worry, but that's what parents do.

I already have toys, call me a loser but I don't really want to move out. My moms house is close to my work and college. I don't have to pay rent, and my mom makes good food. At this time, I don't feel it would be good to move out anyways considering what happened.

I see her point to, but you are failing to see mine I think.

I never said I was buying a liter+ bike, I've been riding dirt bikes since I was a kid. I figured I could start out on a 600cc. GSXR600, R6, or ZX6R. most people say to start out on a 250cc-500cc though

were you implying I am uneducated?

My mom is under the impression everyone who rides a bike dies. I'm not saying you don't increase your risk but It's a risk I'm willing to take.

I can't see my mom going to some bike places, she barely listens to me when I try to talk to here about it. she's pretty close minded on the subject..

I feel I'm ready and responsible enough to own a bike. She mostly said "It's not you I'm worried about it's the other drivers out there."

in the end, I'm checking out a bike today ( GSXR600 )

Actually, no. I can totally understand how it would be interpreted that way but I genuinely wasn't insinuating you directly. It was more of a whimsical statement based upon recent observations from people buying bikes where I live.

I'm a bit of a Kawi fanboy so I'd simply say to get the 6R. Though I really dig the new lights on the R6. I stay away from Suzi's as much as possible, due partially to mechanical distaste (every guy i know who owns a Suzuki is constantly working on them and fixing things) and partially due to the fact that pretty much every Gixxer rider I know is an arrogant douchebag.

Try not going the sportbike route. One of my arguements with my mom to leverage myself was that I wasn't getting a sportbike, and in turn, getting a more relaxing bike that isn't focused on speed/crazy sh1t. It actually worked and there is truth to it.

I've always been more into Hondas; nothing but quality and reliability with my dirt bikes. I was looking at 2005 600RR, but it ended up selling before I could see it again.

I do agree with the gixxer comment though sadly.. the price was right on the bike so I gave it a chance. I've never owned a Suzuki so I can't comment on the reliability...

That sounds like a good idea, but frankly I don't think I would even want a cruiser bike. I'm more into sports cars. I've slowly turned my car into a track car now and driving it on the street just attracts unwanted attention from people who want to race. I've also noticed cops seem to hate me for no real reason.

I've been driving a truck on the street now.. and I just feel bored? I want another fun ride that I can dedicate for street use. I figure, I'll daily drive the truck and bike and keep my car for track use.

I wouldn't object to a CBR, but in all honesty I don't have any realistic experience riding one. I can tell you my feelings on the differences between a ZX10R, Gixxer1000, F1, and a 1098, but I've never owned a CBR and none of the people I ride with ride one.

I learned how to ride on an 85 Nighthawk, though. Glad I made all my mistakes on it, my 10 is flawless after 7k miles because of that.

Anything on 2 wheels is fun and not sluggish like a car. You don't need a sportsbike to enjoy speed and performance and the feeling of being on 2 wheels. You sound determined though and no one will change your mind, so sportsbike it is for you. Convincing your mom will be harder though My mom gets scared when she see's sportsbikes on the highway, as I do too sometimes lol.

Register at 600rr.net if you have any questions or are just seeking info in general.
I have an 07 600RR and I love it. Previously I had a Suzuki M50 cruiser and it just wasn't for me. Sportbikes are a blast. Eventually I'd like to own a cruiser as well, but if I have to choose one it'll be a rocket.

I love it when guys on liter bikes get stomped on the race track by guys on a Suzuki SV650.

Err, a SV1000 MAYBE, but I find it extremely hard to believe that a SV650 would stomp a liter bike unless the rider was completely retarded. Even if you have absolutely no idea how to shift the power difference alone would make me question this unless I saw proof.

Much, no. A few times, yes. I've actually lost to a 6R once, but it was Turbo'd and driven by a very experienced rider. I fully admit to having never faced off vs a SV650, I suppose I just find it very surprising.

at least he's sticking to a 600cc bike, you know, because inexperience people couldn't ever hurt themselves on a 100hp sportbike...

It's a shock to you that an experienced rider on an SV650 can beat an average rider on a liter bike? I fail to see why that surprises you. Any dumbass can buy a liter bike and brag about how fast it is but when it comes down to it the bike is only as fast as the rider on it.

If we're talking about racing at a drag strip and as Saga said unless the 1K rider is outright dumb I find it hard to believe an sv650 would take a 1K inline 4. It would all be about the start and even a poor one for the liter bike wouldn't affect the outcome as long as he can accelerate and shift through the next gear or two, he would easily pass the 650.
