Guy I work with has that exact bike. He bought it used a few years ago and he has put 50,000 miles on it since then. He rides it to work almost ever single day.

Still, I think the 695 would be a better first bike.

I'd check the belts on both of those right away and replace if necessary. Valve checks/adjustments aren't terribly difficult but they need to be performed according to Ducati's recommended maintenance schedule. Not sure what that is on those bikes but it is every 7500 on mine.

Why do you think the 695 would be a better first bike? Less power? I really like the way the multistrada sounds from the reviews. So convince me otherwise!

Why do I still want one so bad after seeing how bad people can get hurt on them?

Motorcycles, why you be so awesome?

11-27-13 Update over a year later:

So I did buy that house as I mentioned in this thread. I also have a buddy with me who just put a deposit down on a Ducati Monster 796 with the corse paint job /drool.

Now I am tempted again. I'm looking at the older, uglier multistradas such as the 2007s. Anyone have experience with that generation?

In 2007 I'm pretty sure they only had the 1100cc motor in the Multistrada. They guy I work with who had a 2003 Multi got clipped by some woman who turned left into the side of his bike, he bought the bike back from the insurance company and bought a 2008 Multistrada 1100 S. He loves these bikes, they are easy to work on, a bargain if you buy them used and his has all the Ohlins suspension bits. It helps if you can work on them yourself though as dealership service is ridiculously expensive.

An 1100 is a bit much for a new rider though. It is just easier to learn to ride on a smaller, lighter bike than on a bigger more powerful bike. This is not up for debate, it is a fact. I'd look for a used 696 or 695 or even a 620 Monster or one of the older Multistrada 620s.

It would pretty much be the 620 Multi if I get something I think.
