As a quick update - odd bug: when you turn the phone volume up, the caller can hear themselves in an echo, like it's on a loud speakerphone. If the volume is turned down, it goes back to normal. It's a pretty big bug - my brother is on the fence about returning it because of this. He's thinking about a click-screen Blackberry now.

That would annoy me too, I like having the volume pretty loud.

Yeah...I have a deadzone on my way to school every day. I get zero bars at school; I have to walk out to the parking lot to get any reception. I drop calls on a near-daily basis. The phone quality, even with 5 bars, is not that great.

I do like having one device in my pocket, however. The iPod is great and iTunes is really easy to use. I also use Simplify Media to stream music and Air Video to stream movies to my iPhone. I listen to a lot of podcasts & audiobooks, so that's very convenient - iTunes is hooked up with Audible.com and can do RSS auto-downloads for podcasts, so it makes syncing fairly hassle-free.

I wish that Motorola would make the phone tech for the next iPhone, and that Apple would switch to Verizon. A Motorola-enhanced Verizon-based iPhone would be glorious :awe:

To me call quality/reliability is INFINITELY more important than how good a phone is. The Droid is on a great network so you wouldn't have to worry about getting dropped calls and you already know that Android is going to get tons of apps since more and more phones are going to use it plus you don't have to use buggy iTunes software.

I want to say call quality is more important, but it's just a small part of what I do with the phone nowadays. I use Email, Internet, Music/Audiobook/Podcasts, and a lot of other things, way more than I make calls. That sounds silly, that call quality isn't that important - it is - but it's just a small percentage of what I do now, so I can live with AT&T's craptacular service. Doesn't mean I have to like it tho!!

As soon as the iPhone goes to Verizon, I'm payin' early termination & switching back over

well based on phone usage, I'd rather have a dedicated mp3 player. Thus, my Zune HD is glorious and has great battery life, and my Droid will be dedicated to everything in my life that's not multimedia, except I'll probably load an internet radio and enjoy stutter free (supposedly, haven't tried) high-quality YouTube videos.

I tell you though, so far here in Columbus reception is amazing. I think this gets better 3G reception than my Omnia. I expect that, my previous Motorola experiences have been exceptional reception (V710 was insane). I get full bars and the Market and Browser are snappy, snappier than anything I'm used to on the Omnia. Very impressed.

Plus the screen. OMG the screen. Is this seriously an LCD? So crisp, and the resolution is great for making things very clear, even on zoomed out webpages. Sometimes don't even need to zoom in, unless you want to push your phone a little further away.

Having owned an iPhone for 2 years (the original and then the 3G), the Droid is a breath of fresh air to me. I love just about everything about this device.

The screen is amazing, I'm having no trouble adjusting to android and this is the most solidly built phone I've ever held in my hands.

It is definitely made better if you have a lot of google already integrated into your life.. I had fallen out of love with my iPhone, though I still think it is a great device.. for my current needs, this one is easily on par if not better than the iPhone.

As most of the reviews have said, its hard to go wrong with either device. I wanted a bit more freedom to customize and a better network and this is the first device that has come out that I can feel as though it isn't a step down from the iPhone that I had.

I think you pretty much nailed it - if you want more customization on a better network, the Droid is your ticket. From a gadget freak's point of view, it's also very, very cool

The V710 on Verizon was my very first cell phone. I dropped my landline, that's how good it was. I later upgraded to a Motorola Q, which was somehow even better in terms of call quality - it actually sounded better than our local landlines lol (yes, I'm a nerd, I compared them haha).

As far as the screen goes, I was very impressed with the readability of email (I think Apple could bump it up a notch - if I zoom in, it goes off the page lol) and also with the outdoor readability of the Droid's screen. I read one review that said the outdoor readability was terrible, but I held it side-by-side with my iPhone and to me it looked waaaaay better - none of that color-eink-transflective look on it. Very nice!

there are third party solutions for visual voicemail?! They work on the same concept, and just as effective? Shit, I love visual voicemail but if I can get the same thing in a free package, damn straight I will.

Google Voice is a free alternative to Visual Voice mail. I got an invite and you can now have your own phone number ported for the voice-to-text functionality of voice mails. You can get an SMS and/or an email with the voice mail transposed. It needs a little work to get it exact, but I can decipher what the message is about.

Quick update:

My brother said he's going to ride it out for the 30-day test period. He's on the fence about keeping it. It has some quirks, but he's getting used to it. Biggest complaint so far is battery life - you have to have a charger at home, in your car, at your work desk, etc.

The call-echo thing is intermittent. It only happens when the volume is up higher. He suspects the caller echo is coming from the earpiece being so loud that the mic picks it up. Doesn't happen 100% of the time tho, hopefully it's a software glitch. Also from a caller's perspective, the phone doesn't sound that good to me. The Razr actually sounds better to me.

If there's anything else interesting in the next few weeks, I'll update this thread.

Oh and he said Youtube looks super crappy.

He isn't watching in High Quality then.

Hit: Menu, More, Watch in High Quality.

Fills the screen with some very nice video. The default viewing is terribad, agreed. But noteworthy, the video is super smooth, stutter free and had no problem keeping the video free of pauses due to buffering; at least, my 3G reception here in outstanding.

That's the best way to go for any heavily used lithium-ion battery: keep it constantly charging/topped-off when possible.

Even if you could make it through an entire day without charging, running down lithium-ion batteries cuts their number of charge cycles.

It's odd that I've had none of the issues your brother has had. I tested or tried to test the volume thing and nobody noticed an echo at all. Youtube has looked great and crisp when I've watched and my battery seems fine. Is he using the battery control widget and turning off the antenna's he isn't using?

With my screen on the fast sleep mode with the antenna's/gps off the battery has been pretty awesome considering all the things running on the phone.

The Dec 11th update specifically addresses that echo issue, among many other small "bugs".

I'm glad to see they're churning out a update so soon.

Seriously, his brother sounds like either he is trying to find every possible thing to complain about, OR he has a faulty unit. I've been reading reports of people having a lot of apps constantly fail and other issues, hard reset fails to fix the problem, and they go and exchange it out for a new replacement and return home with zero problems.

The battery life is a bit low and there's an occassional echo for the caller - you consider that trying to find every possible thing to complain about? Really?

Hmm, only 256 megs of storage for executable apps: (the comments say that the SD card can be used to store data [not exe's] though)

http://www.downloadsquad.com/2009/11/09/droid-does-only-have-256mb-of-storage-for-apps/

That's pretty...wow.

You can root it to get around this (when someone figures that out for this specific phone) and I recall an article pointing out a listing with Google hiring someone to basically help build in this ability into the OS. Can't recall where I saw that article at ATM.

i didn't know this. what's the best way to keep your battery life longest when you initially use the phone? i was charging it fully and letting it die fully and then repeating the process about 3 times. is that not good?

oh.
I remember reading that before, but forgot about it. Didn't realize some games got so big, but for general apps that is going to be a LOT of apps. Games excluded.

Hopefully Google fixes this.

Yeah...one thing I like about the iPhone is that it's just one device that I have to carry around for so many things. I have a zillion silly apps to play with, so storage is a big deal. Also, I'm surprised they already have an updated scheduled...that's very promising.

Down with WinMo!
